We Are Part of the Solution

Chinese language programs, educators, and parents have recently found themselves in a challenging situation, with an atmosphere of mistrust and increasing anti-Asian sentiment embracing our nation. On July 31, 2021, Asia Society held an online panel discussion and invited a group of experienced educators in the Chinese language field to discuss challenges, analyze the complex factors of the current socio-political-cultural climate, and offer insights, strategies, and resources on how to survive and thrive in this critical time.

The conversation was rigorous and rich. Watch the recording and read a full synopsis of the webinar here.

NEWS AND OPPORTUNITIES FROM THE FIELD

Save the Date—Join us September 11, 2021 at 10:30 AM ET for the newest CELIN webinar: "Connecting with NCSSFL: World-Class Resources for Chinese Language Teachers." Chinese language educators can learn about a variety of resources and information from the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL), a dynamic organization that supports language educators across the United States to empower learners, implement policy, and provide professional development. Three veteran NCSSFL members will share details from the NCSSFL website, where policy information like teacher licensing and the Seals of Biliteracy from different states can be analyzed. Registration coming soon.

Host a Teacher—American Councils for International Education is pleased to announce the opening of the Teachers of Critical Languages Program (TCLP) grant application. TCLP is fully funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and helps U.S. K–12 schools to launch new or expand existing Chinese language programs. TCLP makes it easy for U.S. schools to grow their critical language programs by placing fully-funded teachers from China to teach Chinese as a foreign language for an academic year. By sharing their languages and cultures, the teachers bring global competencies to their host schools and communities. Application deadline: October 22, 2021

Education for Equity is an initiative building on the Center for Global Education's work to transform education systems as a means to shape a just and equal society. Resources for educators and staff-curated content address systemic issues of racism, inequity, and injustice in schools. Using our global competence model as a framework, this work aims to provide specific tools to use in classrooms to ensure all students are given equal opportunity to succeed.
