HGO high-users' data: final results presentation

According to Grupo de Resolução de High Users (GRHU), "high-users" are patients who score more than 10 emergency department admissions per year. To address high-users' healthcare and social needs in 2016 GRHU started implementing a patient-centered program at Hospital Garcia de Horta (HGO).

VOH.CoLAB tasked with analyzing program-related data and measuring the impact of the intervention. GRHU and the hospital board were surprised and amazed with the final results
. emergency episodes and hospital stays were reduced by 51%;
. some comorbidities were treated (e.g. digestive and mental illnesses), others were identified as very hard to treat (e.g. respiratory diseases);
. every 1,00€ invested in the program saved 2,30€ to the hospital.
To meet GRHU's needs, VOH.CoLAB will develop a machine learning system that will try to predict the result of the intervention for a specific patient, hence, supporting GRHU in patient recruitment to the program.

Disruptive glossary for citizens in the scope of Covid-19

Developed in collaboration with Centro de Medicina Laboratorial Germano de Sousa and EpiDoCNOVA Medical School - Faculdade de Ciências MédicasFast Track Covid project aims to track nationwide exposure to SARS-CoV-2, using serological tests of a representative sample of the Portuguese population.

In this context, a digital linguistic resource was conceived. It consists of a set of terminological cards that help the citizen understanding the scientific terms contained in the serological test results bulletin which, sometimes, raises some difficulty for citizens to interpreting the test results.

This VOH.CoLAB project had the scientific coordination of Raquel Silva and the development and implementation by Inês Lopes Teixeira, Miguel Cardoso and Pedro Dias. Learn more about the innovative digital resource here!

Telemonitoring pilot kick-off with Patient Zero

VOH.CoLAB is providing the service “Value analysis in patients submitted to an anticoagulant therapeutics: impact of empowerment to self-management through coagulometers".
Roche Diagnostics provides the coagulometers. Telemonitored patients are submitted to anticoagulant therapeutics at the Cardiothoracic Surgery Service of Hospital de Santa Marta - Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central

🏠 From home, patients measure and send the INR value, and report symptoms via chatbot;

🏥 At the hospital, surgeons access the platform and analyze the alarm system developed to make informed clinical decisions.

We are collaborating with the clinical team to:
. design a 1-year telemonitoring service,
. develop a provider-centered web-based platform, and
. create a user-friendly chatbot.

Patient Zero was already recruited to test the digital health service. In short deployment cycles, adjustments of the chatbot and the platform are being conducted. Results are promising so... stay tuned!

VOH.CoLAB in Patient Innovation Bootcamp

Patient Innovation Bootcamp offers a unique training opportunity for people directly affected by health conditions to develop and launch innovative solutions.

On the 3rd September, the last Bootcamp day in Lisbon, Ana Rita Londral shared with participants her experience on Technology Validation in Healthcare.

Salomé Azevedo is the mentor of three teams: Oppioo, Summed and Peercare. She supports the design of first MVP, business model and regulation approval.

Systematic review published in JMIR!

VOH.CoLAB's article entitled "Domains and Methods Used to Assess Home Telemonitoring Scalability: Systematic Review" obtained the publication approval from JMIR - Journal of Medical Internet Research.
The co-authors (Salomé Azevedo, our Head of Digital Health and Value Assessment, Teresa Cipriano Rodrigues, Invited Assistant Professor at CEG-IST, and Ana Rita Londral, our Executive and Scientific Director) studied how researchers and clinicians assess the scalability of home telemonitoring-based interventions under real-world conditions.
JMIR is a worldwide recognized open access, ehealth publisher with an impact factor of 4,77. We are honored by this recognition!

Paper published in Health Management Journal

Our flagship project was published in Health Management Journal, under the title "CardioFollow.AI - A Digital Follow-up Service Expanded Beyond the Hospital Walls".

The article sums up our collaborative work with Vodafone Portugal, Fraunhofer-AICOS and Hospital de Santa Marta - Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central. It describes the intelligent system used to improve patients’ safety and remote surveillance in follow-up for cardiothoracic surgery.

We participated on TREC's Track of Clinical Trials!

TREC is a conference of retrieval in several areas. Teams submit several systems to solve a specific problem and, then, the systems are ranked according to their retrieval performance.

Flávio MartinsMiguel Cardoso and Simão Gonçalves submitted 5 approaches to TREC's Track of Clinical Trials, where the goal was to develop a retrieval system capable of finding suitable clinical trials for patients, based on a textual medical description of each patient.

We are now waiting for the competition's results - fingers crossed!

Meet our summer trainee: Inês Lopes Teixeira

Inês Lopes Teixeira is a master’s student in Biomedical Engineering at University of Minho. For 8 weeks, she worked with us as summer trainee.

Inês collaborated in Fast Track Covid, in the design and creation of a digital health literacy resource - terminology cards - to help citizens better understand the result of their serological test to COVID-19.
Also, she accepted the challenge to design a thoughtful strategy for our Instagram account, which aims at leveraging Citizen Empowerment and Health Literacy.

"I discovered in the summer internship an incredible experience to grow professionally and also as a person, where I was surrounded by hardworking and inspiring people. By "inspiring" I mean people who gave me a remarkable teamwork experience, enable me to grow in a field I'm passionate about.”

🥳 Thank you and the best of luck!

We thank Flávio and Carolina for their contributions to VOH.CoLAB's work, and wish them the best of luck!
Flávio Martins joined the Computer Science and Engineering Department of Instituto Superior Técnico as an Assistant Professor.
