A federal election has been called at a critical juncture for communities. COVID-19 has stretched thin the social infrastructure required to keep communities and Canadians healthy and safe. In the midst of this, community foundations from coast to coast to coast have stepped up to support their community.

As we look towards a just recovery, we know that joint efforts with the next government will ensure a greater impact. With your help, we want to call on all candidates in the federal election to work alongside community philanthropy and to support the social sector through a recovery driven by community.

To support outreach, we’ve created a #DrivenbyCommunity Election Amplification Package. This package has a letter you can send to all candidates in your area, social media graphics and key messages. We’ve highlighted five key non-partisan measures that present an opportunity to advance recovery efforts that are truly inclusive, driven by community, and long term. These are:

1.  The Government of Canada fully implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice, and honour the newly enshrined UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

2.  Implement and scale-up existing anti-racism efforts and funding commitments to Black communities will ensure they have agency in defining their own future.

3.  Investment in social infrastructure to ensure no one is left behind.

4.  Unlock social finance to enable social purpose organizations to tackle some of the biggest social, economic, cultural and environmental challenges we face.

5.  Reform and relax the existing rules on qualified donees now to unlock new resources to advance a recovery that is driven by community.

Elections are a critical moment in time where community foundations can use their voice and influence decision making. The strength of our network and the charities and nonprofit organizations we support showcase the impact of a strategy and efforts that are driven by community. Thank you for all your work as we relentlessly pursue a future where everyone belongs.

Yours truly,
