COVID keeps throwing us curve balls as the end of summer nears

Dear Affogato HR Consulting Clients and Friends,

Summer time and the living is easy…well not so fast.  At the end of August, we find ourselves dealing with COVID surges, cancelled travel plans and vaccine debates creating divisions in our workplaces.  This too shall pass, but for now we need recognize that COVID will be with us for some time.

With the FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine and Moderna to soon follow, we are seeing an increase in vaccine mandates in cities and businesses.  Will states be next?  Is this the right decision for your business?  Delta Airlines has taken a different approach by implementing a $200 surcharge for unvaccinated workers to cover increased benefits costs related to COVID.  Can they do this?  Will it work?  Read more about the legal considerations for health care premium differentials.

Speaking of health benefits, learn more about Individual Health Reimbursement Arrangements (ICHRA).  An ICHRA  allows businesses to offer employees a monthly tax-free allowance to buy individual health coverage and cover expenses for their unique needs. This enables employees to shop for insurance outside of an employer’s group health plan or when an employer does not offer health insurance at all.

And as pandemic life recedes, people are leaving their jobs in search of more money, more flexibility and more happiness. In what is now being called “The Great Resignation”, many employees are rethinking what work means to them, how they are valued, and how they spend their time. And while many employers are planning on increasing pay, numerous surveys taken during the coronavirus, have found that money alone will not be enough to satisfy workers, with schedule flexibility and additional benefits top of the demands employees are making of employers.

So what does flexibility mean?  Not everyone can work from home or have a flexible schedule. Both employers and employees need to think about what flexibility means to them.  Here is a  great read on this topic from WeWork.

We’d love to hear from you and share thoughts on The Great Resignation and other workplace challenges. Join our Coffee Break on Thursday, September 9th @ 1:30 pm for an opportunity to meet with the Affogato team and other clients in an informal 30 minute break.

Stay safe and sane.

Lisa, Jonna, Lisha and Karen
