Pray for Our Churches

We will highlight a CAP church each week and invite you to join us in prayer for them. This week we pray for Johns Island Presbyterian Church on Johns Island. Johns Island was organized in 1710 and has 319 members. They are currently searching for an Interim Pastor.
The CAP Committee on Representation is working to develop a slate of nominees to serve as commissioners to General Assembly and on the ministry teams of presbytery in 2022. For a list of ministry team descriptions within the presbytery, click HERE. Please look over the description for each position and prayerfully consider nominating yourself or someone you feel is gifted to serve by filling out this Google Form or contacting Rev. Cameron Smith

The 225th General Assembly (2022) will be different from any previous GA with hybrid opening plenaries on June 18. Commissioners and advisory delegates from a quarter of the committees will be present in Louisville and all others will participate from home. The committees will meet in person in Louisville, a quarter at a time, over the course of two weeks from June 20 – July 2. Then, the plenaries will be completely online for all delegates from July 5–9 after committee meetings conclude.
CAP NEEDS: CAP can send two ruling elders, two teaching elders, and one young adult delegate to General Assembly in 2022. A slate of nominees will be presented at the December presbytery meeting to choose delegates and alternates for each position.

Presbyterian Campus Ministry Rebrands
at the College of Charleston as "EMPOWHER"

In the aftermath of Covid-19 shutting down most student organizations at the College of Charleston, campus ministries are setting up to restart and rebuild. Given the time to reflect and discerning this as a new opportunity, Presbyterian campus ministry in the Charleston Atlantic Presbytery is embracing the reality that the mission to students at the College of Charleston has always been mostly of women - as much as 95% some years. With a passionate new female interim director, the campus ministry known previously as "Journey" has now been rebranded as "Empowher," and will be designed to specifically minister to women on campus through a faithfully biblical and feminist lens. Meanwhile, campus ministry at the Citadel Military College will remain "Presbyterian Journey."

If you would like more information on Empowher, would like to assist in supporting young women, or would like to financially contribute to this donation-dependent ministry, please contact interim director Erin Norton at cofcempowher@gmail.com

Regarding Ruling Elders:
A Monthly Series for Serving Faithfully
 by Rodger Nishioka
This month’s theme: Leaders Hope

Jack has just turned 80 years old, and his health is declining. I’m with him at the hospital at a low moment. He is still as handsome as ever. In his younger years, he was an excellent athlete and then a fine coach and teacher. He has shaped countless lives, but now, as his body is able to do less and less, his spirit is struggling. He is much loved by his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. His mind is sharp. I sit by his bedside as we talk. He is frustrated and angry. He had been visited by yet another physician whose bedside manner, according to Jack, left much to be desired. He describes how the young doctor looked at the chart more than at him and matter-of-factly talked through his current condition. Then, ending her visit, she glanced at him and said something along the lines of “well, we’re doing pretty much all we can do” and walked out of his room. “Can you believe it?!” he asks me incredulously. “Rodger,” he says emphatically, “remember this. You have to give us some hope. We have to have hope!”… Continue reading here
Gathering Around Books (The GAB Group)
4th Friday of each month, 5:30 p.m.

Do you love to read and discuss what you have read with fellow bibliophiles?  If so, Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church invites you join them for a monthly discussion facilitated by Parish Associate Lib McGregor Simmons of a fiction or non-fiction book which may not be overtly religious, but contains content and themes that can be discussed from a faith perspective.

The discussion is open to anyone who loves to read and discuss what one has read with fellow bibliophiles. Even if you have not finished the book, you are invited as we talk about these short stories with particular attention to themes related to faith and religion. Register to here to join. You will be sent an automatic Zoom link upon registration.
The August 27 GAB book Nomadland by Jessica Bruder was the inspiration for the film which was awarded the most recent Best Picture Oscar. One reviewer has written, "This is an important book.… A calmly stated chronicle of devastation. But told as story after story, it is also a riveting collection of tales about irresistible people―quirky, valiant people who deserve respect and a decent life."
Upcoming Books
September 24: Abide With Me by Elizabeth Strout
October 22: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

The 2021-22 Presbyterian Women Horizons Bible Study is entitled "What My Grandmothers Taught Me: Learning from the Women In Matthew's Genealogy of Jesus."

Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary—Matthew names these women for a reason. How might Jesus have heard the stories of his grandmothers? What can these Grandmothers-of-the-Faith teach us?  By exploring these stories together, we will gain a richer understanding of God's good news in Jesus Christ.

This study will be led by Lib McGregor Simmons, parish associate at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.  It will meet via Zoom on the last Sunday of each month from 7-8 p.m.  The first meeting will be August 29.

The study is open to all and will be especially helpful for persons who will be leading their monthly circle Bible study.

Register for the class HERE, and you will be sent an automatic Zoom link.

Needs and Opportunities

Mackay Presbyterian Mission – Presbyterian Home Services Ministry

The Presbyterian Home Services Ministry is a ministry created by the Mackay Presbyterian Mission in order to serve as an intermediary between people, churches or entities in need of some kind of residential maintenance or construction services with people or groups of Hispanic/Latino workers in our community. Sadly, our families often face economic, health and safety insecurity due to the lack of employment or the lack of fair compensation for work performed. The ministry has been created to help alleviate some of those concerns. The following are a list of services offered by the ministry:

  • Painting
  • Metal Roofing
  • Roof Shingles
  • Wood Framing
  • Porch
  • Siding
  • Screened Porch
  • Install Windows
  • Wood Flooring
  • Concrete flooring
  • Foundation

The procedure will be as follow; the Mackay Presbyterian Mission receives a request of service, then we contact qualified/competent personnel who can effectively and satisfactorily complete the request.  The person or group interested in the service will receive a quote for the requested work. All economic negotiations will be between the party requesting the service and the person or group that will perform the service. The Mackay Presbyterian Mission will not receive any economic compensation for any involvement. Charleston Atlantic Presbytery does not endorse the particular contractors nor does it warrant the work.
