Word from the President
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you have all managed to enjoy something of a summer break. The second virtual edition of the Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC) will soon be upon us and we look forward to welcoming you to the meeting. Clearly virtual conferencing is now part of the scientific landscape and new tools and platforms are being developed to meet this demand. EPSC2021 takes advantage of these and has an updated format in response to your feedback from 2020.
The Europlanet Research Infrastructure (RI) continues to offer opportunities for you to conduct research through virtual and physical visits to facilities (see reports from the recent Greenland expedition below). We are also now looking for new data and tools to be made accessible through our unique VESPA service and portal.
In recent months, we have also seen the launch of the Horizon Europe programme, Europe’s largest investment in R&I. The Europlanet Society is hosting a series of webinars to help its members understand the programme, identify opportunities and submit competitive proposals. Please look out for announcements of these briefings.
Finally please encourage your colleagues and students to join the Europlanet Society. The more members we have the stronger our voice with funders and politicians and the more funding we will have to offer members. EPSC2021 will be an opportunity for you to connect with the Society's Regional Hubs, Early Careers Network and other committees and to get involved. The Society is for you and we need members to not only help run it but to determine its future direction – so join us for the General Assembly on Thursday 23 September and be part of it!

2020-21 VESPA Open Call Announcement
The 2021 Open Call for VESPA services is out now!
The VESPA activity in the Europlanet 2024 RI programme aims to make Planetary Science and Solar System data accessible and searchable through an interoperable system following the principles of Open Science.
In the combined 2020-21 VESPA Open Call, up to 10 projects will be selected to enlarge the data content accessible via the VESPA interface.

Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC) 2021 Virtual Meeting
13 – 24 September 2021
The 2021 Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC) will take place as a virtual meeting from 13-24 September 2021. The EPSC2021 programme covers the full spectrum of planetary science and technology across 43 sessions. More than 840 oral and poster presentations have been submitted by planetary scientists from Europe, the US and around the world.
The deadline for submitting scientific presentations (10-minute oral video or virtual poster presentation file) is Thursday, 2 September 2021. You should also provide a single slide for your one-minute live pitch by 2 September.

Central Europe Hub - Calling for a new chair

An opportunity to become the next Central Europe Hub chair. The Central Europe Hub was established in 2018 to promote planetary science and related fields for the benefit of the Austrian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Slovenian, Slovakian and wider European community, within the Europlanet Society.

Dr Didier Moreau has been nominated for the position of Treasurer of the Europlanet Society. The results of the election will be announced at the General Assembly on 23 September 2021, during the virtual EPSC 2021.

José Eduardo Silva
José Eduardo Silva is a PhD Candidate in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA) in Lisbon, Portugal. He works with spacecraft imaging data of Solar System planets in order to study the dynamics and features of their atmospheres.

EPSC 2021 Planetary Science Wiki Edit-a-thon
The Diversity Committee of the Europlanet Society, in collaboration with Women in Red and WikiDonne, is organising a second edition of the Planetary Science Wiki Edit-A-Thon, which was first held during EPSC2020. The 2021 Edit-A-Thon will continue to create and translate Wikipedia profiles to highlight diversity within the planetary science community.
Participants from the EPSC2020 Planetary Science Wiki Edit-a-thon have continued to meet monthly over the past year, adding new and translated Wikipedia profiles of planetary scientists.
This month, we are sharing the story of Lidiya Tseraskaya, whose profile is now available in Italian, thanks to the Edit-a-thon participants.
Lidiya Tseraskaya worked at the Moscow Observatory, where she discovered 219 variable stars; among them (1905) RV Tauri variable and recognized its uniqueness. The Venusian crater Tseraskaya was named after her. Her academic papers were published as "W. Ceraski.

ELSI Master-PHD Course on origin of life and Astrobiology
The Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) is launching a new Master-PhD course on origin-of-life science and astrobiology at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The five-year ELSI course is open for domestic and international students who wish to tackle fundamental questions in natural science such as the origin and evolution of living planets. ELSI will provide financial support (as a salary of a research assistant) for all the students, except for ones who are going to be supported by JSPS DC fellowships (Japan) or equivalent fellowships.

Planetary Science Highlights

Dancing around Venus
A close flyby of the planet Venus between 9 and 10 August, led to an (almost) meeting of the Euro-Japanese BepiColombo and the Euro-American Solar Orbiter (SOLO) spacecrafts. Venus isn’t the final destination of either mission but the approach to the planet made it possible to collect valuable data for future studies.
SOLO will use Venus’s gravity multiple times to get closer to the Sun and to change direction to get a good look at the Sun’s poles (a first for a spacecraft), while BepiColombo needs gravitational help from Earth, Venus and Mercury itself to reach its destination.

Finding the Cause of a Fatal Problem in Rocket Engine Combustors

Researchers have used advanced time-series analyses based on complex systems to find out the fatal high-frequency oscillations that plague the combustion chambers in rocket engines. These combustion oscillations can cause fatal damage to rocket engines, aero engines, and gas turbines.
