Cabot Conversations: Climate Emergency
It's here! Our first of ten fascinating conversations around climate change in the run-up to COP26. This first conversation is about the Climate Emergency with ex-Met Office Chief Scientist Dame Professor Julia Slingo and climate scientist Dr Dann Mitchell. Increased snowfall will offset sea level rise from melting Antarctic ice sheet, new study finds
A new study predicts that any sea level rise in the world’s most southern continent will be countered by an increase in snowfall, associated with a warmer Polar atmosphere. Using modern methods to calculate projected changes to sea levels, researchers discovered that the two ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica respond differently, reflecting their very distinct local climates. Understanding enzyme evolution paves the way for green chemistry
Researchers at the University of Bristol have shown how laboratory evolution can give rise to highly efficient enzymes for new-to-nature reactions, opening the door for novel and more environmentally friendly ways to make drugs and other chemicals. Read more.
Climate change ‘may have driven emergence of coronavirus’
Climate change may have driven the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, a new study claims. However, Caboteer Professor Paul Valdes who was not involved with this study, called the findings ‘interesting’ but pointed out some drawbacks. Read more.

What outcomes do we need to see at this year’s United Nations climate talks (COP26) that haven’t happened in previous years? Join us for the Cabot Institute for the Environment’s prestigious Annual Lecture where we will discover three different perspectives and what they think we should particularly be looking out for and paying attention to at this year’s event. Joining us will be:
  • Mya-Rose Craig (Birdgirl), young birder, naturalist, environmentalist & writer
  • Journalist Leo Hickman, Director and Editor of Carbon Brief;
  • Alyssa Gilbert, Director of Policy and Translation at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment and chair of the COP26 Universities Network.
  • Cabot Institute Associate Director and University of Bristol lead on COP26, Professor Paul Bates CBE FRS, will be chairing the event.
