THE PIPELINE
Have you ever wondered
How your Plumbing System works?
Have you ever wondered how your home drain-waste-vent (DWV) system works?

The more you know about your home, the easier it is to identify when you need a professional's help or when you can fix it yourself.

The drainpipes collect the water from sinks, showers, tubs, and appliances.

The waste pipes remove water and material from the toilet.

The vent pipes remove or exhaust sewer gases and allow air to enter the system so that the wastewater flows freely.
The drainpipes are made of cast iron, galvanized pipe, copper, or plastic. Local building codes that regulate the materials used in the DWV system have changed over the years, so most older homes usually have a combination of materials.

A typical bathroom sink is a good example of how all these components work together. You probably haven’t spent much time observing the pipes beneath your vanity, but take a look and you will see something like the image to the right.

The p-trap
Water runs down the sink drain into a p-trap (so-called because it’s shaped like the letter), which fills up with water to prevent sewer gases and odors from getting into the house through the pipe. This water gets refreshed whenever more water runs through it. If you smell a sewer smell, a good starting place is to run water to refresh the dry p-trap.

A drainpipe attached to the p-trap goes into an opening in the wall.

Behind the wall (where you can’t see), a vent line and drainpipe lead to a soil stack, which is the control center of the wastewater system. Drain pipes take the wastewater to the soil stack; through the stack, sewer gases are carried up to the roof through vent lines.

All the faucets and water appliances in a house use this same system of drains, pipes, and vents.

The sewer line
As for the sewer line itself, ideally, you have Schedule40 PVC, SDR35 or HDPE installed. However, you may still have a clay, cast iron or tile sewer line that is in good condition. The sewer line needs the proper fall in order for the waste to use gravity to do what it does best – fall. You need a minimum of 1/8” for every foot of line from the home to the city mainline. The line should have proper connections with no offset joints, breaks or roots. Water should flow smoothly without escaping. It is recommended to have your line cleaned every 1-3 years to remove built-up debris and roots.

If you have a newer PVC line you should have exterior double sweep clean-outs so that the line can easily be accessed in both directions to camera or clean.

If you're experiencing sewer line issues beyond your ability to fix, our crews are VERY EXPERIENCED and EXPERTS at getting the job done quickly, correctly and affordably. Give us a call!

Also, for every referral given between now and the end of November, your name will be entered into a raffle for Bronco tickets for the game on 12/19 against the Cincinnati Bengals. The drawing will be on Friday December 3rd. GOOOOO Broncos!!

RIP Javier
If Sewer Lines Only did your sewer line repair in the past year and a half there is a good chance that Javier was one of the awesome crew members. He had a great attitude, was hard working and was always willing to help his fellow crew members out. After a long hard fight, Javier succumbed to his lifelong health issues. We will miss him!
