Tahmina invites the Notre Dame Law School community to a discussion of the situation on the ground in Afghanistan, including how we got here and what we can do to support her and human rights defenders in Afghanistan.
Tahmina earned her LL.M. in Human Rights Law from Notre Dame in 2020. Before coming to Notre Dame she served for three years with the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, where she worked on gender inclusivity and human rights centered justice. This work involved supporting victims and meeting perpetrators of human rights abuses and violent crimes, including militias and warlords. This latter part of the work means all those who have worked with, or are in any way associated with the AIHRC, are known to the Taliban.
Tahmina will update us on the risks that human rights defenders, journalists, activists, and female students - including her own family members - are now facing.
In Tahmina’s own words, “When I came to the United States, I didn’t have anyone here, but Notre Dame gave me a home and people at Notre Dame Law School became family. Right now I really need my Notre Dame family to support me.”
