• Las coberturas que tuvieron una pérdida neta (decrecimiento) entre 2000 y 2020 fueron “bosque” y “vegetación herbácea/sabana”.
• Desde el año 2000, hasta finales del 2020, la superficie del bosque en el AM se redujo en 520.900 hectáreas (ha) equivalente a 677.000 campos de fútbol (7.6%).
• Entre el año 2015 y el 2020 la pérdida fue de 230.121 ha, siendo ésta la mayor pérdida de bosque de entre todos los períodos estudiados.
• En el año 2020 el bosque cubría el 56.6% del total de la superficie del AM, pero su extensión ha venido disminuyendo progresivamente en el tiempo desde el 2000, y se ha acelerado aún más desde el año 2015, período en que entró en vigencia el Arco Minero.
• El mayor causante de la pérdida de bosque parece ser el uso agropecuario y en segundo lugar el minero, el cual se triplicó en superficie entre el 2015 y 2020. Sin embargo, la deforestación con fines forestales o madereros puede ser importante, aunque no fue posible estimarla en este estudio.
• Estos resultados evidencian un rotundo fracaso de la gestión ambiental del Estado venezolano.
• Los impactos de la minería son multidimensionales: sociales, culturales, políticos, económicos, ecológicos, etc. Sobre todos ellos nos hemos referido en nuestros informes previos. Sin embargo, queremos aquí focalizarnos en el impacto ecológico, y particularmente en uno de los más visibles y objetivamente medibles: el cambio de la cobertura vegetal.

• These results show a resounding failure of environmental management by the Venezuelan State.
