COVID-19 update

Earlier this week we learned that the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination full approval. This action replaces the December 2020 decision to put the vaccine on emergency status. For the first time, the country has a COVID-19 vaccine option that is comparable to those used to combat other diseases.

COVID-19 and student-athletes
Over the past few weeks, the university has received questions from student-athletes and parents of student-athletes who are not vaccinated. We want to communicate clearly with all about the potential consequences of a positive COVID-19 test result for an unvaccinated AU student who is a member of an intercollegiate team. Here are the key facts:

  • AU will follow all NCAA guidance that requires an unvaccinated student to be tested three times per week.
  • A positive test result will trigger a mandatory 10-day period of quarantine — either at home or in a nearby hotel where the university has reserved rooms for such purposes.
  • The university will pass along to these students the $110 charge per night for their hotel stay and meal delivery.
  • Students will be responsible for making appropriate arrangements with faculty to remain abreast of academic work during the quarantine period.
  • A student-athlete concluding the quarantine period then will be expected to complete the COVID-19 clearance program, also suggested by the NCAA.

All told, a positive COVID-19 test could result in a 2–3 week absence from team practices and competition.

AU emergency notification program

AU maintains an emergency messaging system that will notify users of severe weather or other emergency situations affecting our campuses. Notifications will be sent via email and text message, and also be posted on aurora.edu. AU students are automatically enrolled for emergency notifications. We encourage family members to sign up for this service at aurora.edu/alerts.

Free telehealth program for students

Aurora University is excited to offer TimelyCare, a new telehealth program for students. The service provides access to medical and mental virtual healthcare from anywhere in the United States 24 hours a day seven days a week, with no cost to visit!

Whether a student is feeling under the weather, anxious, or overwhelmed, he/she will be able to talk to a licensed provider from his/her smartphone or any web-enabled device. Licensed providers are available to offer medical and mental health support via phone or secure video visits. There are six services available:

  • Medical: 24/7, on-demand access to a medical provider that can treat a wide range of common illnesses like cold and flu, sinus infection, and allergies
  • Scheduled Medical: scheduled options to speak to a medical provider
  • TalkNow: 24/7, on-demand access to a mental health professional to talk about anything at anytime
  • Scheduled Counseling: scheduled options to speak to a licensed counselor
  • Health Coaching: access to a nutritional specialist to help students adopt healthier lifestyle behaviors related to sleep issues, weight management and more
  • Psychiatry: services provided by campus counseling referral

Students can register for TimelyCare with their preferred name and AU email address at timelycare.com/AU.
