THE LANCET - PLANETARY HEALTH: Mortality risk attributable to wildfire-related PM2·5 pollution: a global time series study in 749 locations. G. Chen et al. Sept 2021. Many regions of the world are now facing more frequent and intense wildfires as temperatures increase with climate change. The relationship between wildfire smoke and premature deaths has not been well understood.
This study found that short-term exposure to wildfire smoke causes more than 33,000 deaths each year from all causes, cardiovascular causes, and respiratory causes, in 749 cities in 43 countries and regions during 2000–2016. It concluded that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfires is more harmful and persistent than PM2.5 from urban sources. It also found that wildfire smoke contributes to suicide, diabetes, renal diseases, and other adverse health outcomes. It did not estimate the impacts on people living in rural areas.
