 Exciting updates from ISRRA central

In our previous newsletter I outlined that one of the challenges of forming an international Alliance from a governance point of view, is that we need to formalize the Alliance, before we can ask funders to support the Alliance. To do this, we were advised to take a staged approach to development, starting with creation of a time limited, formalised “Start Up” governance group.
I am pleased to announce the members of ISRRA who have agreed to form the Start Up Executive group. Members of this group will meet regularly to shape our start up activities. The period of appointment is for 12 months following the signing of the formal agreement between organisations. During this time, we plan to acquire funds to support ISRRA administration and create systems and processes for transparent elections.

The Start Up Governance Team

Calgary (Canada)

Katharina Sunnerhagen, University of Gothenburg

Dale Corbett, Brain and Mind Research Institute, University of Ottawa (Canada)

Marion Walker, University of Nottingham

We are looking for additional members of the Start Up Executive

In addition to our current members, the Executive will include both a member of the Scientific Committee (see call for members below), a member of the Roundtable leadership group (see EOIs for more information) to maintain great communication between these areas of activity. In addition, in the near future we will be putting a call out for applications from one or two emerging leaders to join the Executive to help shape ISRRA. People with lived experience will also be part of the Executive. We look forward to introducing you to the full start up Executive team in coming months.

The ISRRA website is under development

Over the last couple of months, the ISRRA communication team has been working hard to put the ISRRA website together. We hope to launch it in the next 3-4 weeks. If you would like to become a beta tester for the website please contact us by clicking the button below

Looking forward to further communications!

 Roundtable Update – SRRR III

The EOI process was a great success! We are pleased to announce that we received nine full applications to hold a Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtable (SRRR III) in 2021/2022.

What happens next?
These now need to be paired down to the top 3-4 topic areas. The ISRRA executive will be reviewing, ranking and discussing these EOIs soon. Once the top Roundtable ideas have been finalized, the SRRR leadership group (2 chairs per topic) will form. It will be their job to drive the scoping and execution of the consensus process over the next 12-18 months.

Adaptations for the pandemic will need to be made, but maybe a face-to-face final meeting will be possible in 2022.

We expect to announce the next Roundtable topics in September.

 Updates from working groups

Flagship projects

The flagship group will soon be calling for expressions of interest (EOIs) to those researchers who would like to submit flagship projects in stroke recovery. This EOI process is the first step in pitching flagship ideas. The top few ideas will be selected to go through to a pitch session, which we expect to occur later in 2021.

Centres of Clinical Excellence (CoE)

The 7 criteria for CoE have been finalized. The wording is now agreed on and being circulated to Australia, India, Malaysia, and the UK. The next phase is to operationalize the criteria so that it can be measured. A subgroup is planned to discuss next steps of this work, such as how we would like to develop key performance indicators (KPIs) for each criterion.

 Thank you ISRRA contributors!

Thank you message from Julie Bernhardt

A lot of people have been part of the development of our first 5 year strategic plan and completion of “Task and Finish” activities to get us here.

Firstly, thank you to absolutely everyone who has assisted with feedback, comments, conversations – everything helps to create an Alliance culture.

A special shout out to the Task and Finish leaders (in bold) who have progressed important start up activities, and their teams. Apologies if we missed anyone!

Finally, a big thank you from me to Kate Hayward who has been my partner in crime establishing systems and processes and workshopping start up governance, and to Emily Dalton who was a rock to get our first ISRRA meeting off the ground.

As we move into our next phase we look forward to working with old and new faces. Do consider joining the Scientific Committee or Working Groups (or suggesting new working groups) as we move forward.

 Publish your high-quality review

Editors from both the International Journal of Stroke and Stroke are looking for suggestions for high quality reviews. As a community committed to advancing stroke recovery and rehabilitation science and practice, it’s up to us to promote our field. To do that, we need to be pro-active in suggesting topics and review teams for these calls.

If you have an idea for a review (that you don’t need to lead), please send your ‘pitch’ to our admin email and we will forward it to the journal editors.

An effective pitch will:

  • Outline why a review of the topic is important and timely

  • Propose a lead or several authors who would produce a high-quality review (narrative, scoping, systematic)

  • May suggest the scope of the review

Consider the journals calling for reviews – it is unlikely that your idea will get advanced if you propose a review that has recently been published either in these journal or in other journals.

If you have a review that is almost complete that you think is novel, timely and of excellent quality, you are welcome to submit that idea. Do state the expected timeline to completion of the review in your email, providing information about Topic, authors, and scope.
Contact ISRRA central to register your review suggestion

World Stroke Organization – Call for Webinar Proposals

WSO is organizing a series of international webinars and is looking for ideas that address a literature gap or need in stroke. Submissions that highlight a recent important guideline or give an update on a controversial  topic are also welcome.
