Everything Kāpiti

Ngā Pitopito kōrero mai i te Kaunihera o Kāpiti

Kia ora Kāpiti

Things can certainly change quickly in a week! This issue we look at what you need to know to stay safe and comfortable in Alert Level 4 lockdown. We give a shout out to our essential workers, take a look at the upcoming representation review and government funding opportunities for housing infrastructure.

Let’s keep up the kindness Kāpiti, keep looking after each other, and being the amazing community that we're so lucky to live in.

Noho haumaru noho pai – stay safe, stay well.

Superheroes work among us

Our essential workers are working for us, so we’ll stay home for them.

People like our contractors (pictured) are our superheroes right now, cleaning out a sump so it works as it should – essential work at this time of year, especially when the next downpour could happen at any moment!

Essential Council staff and contractors are working hard to keep things working for us all, while keeping safe to prevent any chance of spreading COVID-19. It’s stressful balancing those things, and we’d like to celebrate the great mahi (work) they’re doing for us all. Great job folks, and thanks so much for everything you do!

Are you wired for Antenno?

Have you downloaded our Antenno app yet?

We’re using it to send you important COVID-related messages straight to your phone, so you know what you need to know, as fast as possible!

In non-pandemic times, Antenno sends you Council-related notifications about sports ground closures, roadworks, major water outages, and Council events.

You can also use Antenno to quickly let us know about Council-related issues that need our attention. Just go to the app and add to 'Your reports' – the app will prompt you for the info we need.

On-lead walkies for everyone!

Our pooches love lockdown more than anyone, with lots of quality bonding time.
It’s important you remember these rules while we’re at Level 4 (and 3):

silhouette of man walking dog on lead on the beach

•    always keep your dog on lead when out (including in normally off-lead areas) – this reduces the chance of dog scuffles and bursting anyone's bubble
•    keep your dog two metres from other people and dogs
•    walk from home if you can, rather than driving to a walking area
•    our dog parks are also closed at this time.

It’s a stressful time for everyone, but you can help reduce that stress by following these simple rules. Keep safe Kāpiti!

What's happening with rubbish and recycling at Level 4

Rubbish collection is an essential service, so kerbside collectors are still working at Alert Level 4. If you contract these services you should have received a communication from your kerbside collection provider.

recycle bins in a row on the street

Recycling wheelie bins will be emptied but sent to landfill, as the regional sorting plant in Petone is closed at Level 4; EnviroWaste and Low Cost Bins glass bins won’t be collected.

We recommend holding on to your recycling and greenwaste if you can until things are a bit more normal. Some things to think about doing:

• wash your recycling well, and store until transfer stations reopen
• stockpile your greenwaste until your collection restarts, or the transfer stations reopen
• start your own home composting.

Our playgrounds are lava!

Remember folks, our playgrounds and skateparks are closed at Level 4 (and 3) – please don’t use them.

empty playground

Like you, we had very short notice of lockdown, so we didn’t have time to get out and fence or tape off our 50-plus playgrounds safely.

The Prime Minister’s made it clear that using playgrounds is strictly prohibited, so please do the right thing and follow the Alert Level 4 rules.

It’s tough for everyone, especially our tamariki; but if we continue to play it safe we’ll all get back to normal sooner rather than later.

What should our local democracy look like?

Do you have a view on the effectiveness of council wards, community boards, or whether councillors should be elected from your local area or across the district?

Council meeting in progress

You'll soon have the chance to have your say on how your Council should represent you.

At this week’s Council meeting, councillors will finalise their preferred option for new representation arrangements for the 2022 local body elections.

We’ll consult publicly on their proposal soon.

Funding sought for housing infrastructure

We've submitted an expression of interest for funding to support housing development in Kāpiti through the Government’s $1 billion Infrastructure Acceleration Fund.

Housing affordability and availability is one of the biggest problems we face as a community and Council is committed to playing its part to improve the situation. During our recent Long-term Plan process our community told us they agree.

To help drive a number of housing projects forward we have applied for funding for a range of infrastructure projects which would support these and other future developments, and help build our community resiliency.

Be active but keep your distance

We're so lucky to have some amazing trails and walkways right on our doorstep but that doesn't mean we can let our guard down. At Alert Level 4, you can exercise in your local area on your own, or with people in your household bubble but you must stay two metres away from others, or always wear a mask.

Stick to simple outdoor exercise, and avoid activities where you can get injured or lost. Don't go swimming, white baiting, surfing, boating, hunting or tramping. It's important emergency services remain available to support the COVID-19 response.

And, if you're unwell, do NOT go outside. If you need healthcare, you can access it the same way you normally would. If it's your GP, give them a ring. If it’s Healthline, ring free on 0800 611 116.

We've got this Kapiti – stick to your bubble and exercise together, but be smart.

Who will you get vaccinated for?

COVID-19 official illustration for booking a vaccination

Getting vaccinated is one of the most important things we can do to protect ourselves, our whānau, and our community from COVID-19.

If you’re over 40, or in Groups 1, 2 or 3, and haven’t already, the Government’s encouraging you to register for your vaccination immediately.

Find out more about the vaccines on the COVID-19 website.

Māori Language Moment

One thing we're good at is uniting as one; whether it’s against COVID or getting behind our indigenous language. Last year more than 1 million people sang, recited poetry, paddled waka ama, prayed and celebrated their way into history by taking part in the Māori Language Moment.

This year's virtual moment is bigger than ever and the goal is to get more than 2 million New Zealanders celebrating Te Reo Māori together at 12 midday on Tuesday 14 September.

So come on Kāpiti, there's never been a better time to give Te Reo Māori a go. Help set a world record this Māori Language Moment!
