Research and Analysis

Somali Studies International Association (SSIA) 2021 Congress, 2-4 July 2021: The SSIA, founded in 1978, holds a Congress every three years to promote the generation and sharing of knowledge and understanding of Somalis, their history and their geographies. As part of the 14th Congress which was held in Jigjiga, ReDSS research consultant Alemu Asfaw presented a paper on Forced Displacement in the Somali Region of Ethiopia: A review of the evidence. You can find here the presentation of this paper, and the congress plans to publish a Scientific Journal with the full papers presented by the end of 2021.

Forced Displacement Researchers Meeting: Since 2019, the ReDSS Ethiopia research team has worked to promote a common research agenda related to forced displacement in Ethiopia. To this end, a meeting with research core group members was held on the 29th of July 2021 to discuss developments regarding researches related to forced displacement and refugees in Ethiopia. ReDSS also discussed with UNHCR Ethiopia on developments regarding formalizing the Ethiopian Academic Network on Forced Displacement.

Capacity Development
ReDSS support to capacity development of local authorities in Somali Regional State: In partnership with UNHCR and with the support of the EU Trust Fund, ReDSS procured and officially handed over furniture and materials to equip the training halls of local authorities in Awbare and Kebribayah woredas on 17th and 18th August 2021, respectively. The materials will be used to help strengthen the coordination and capacities of CRR structures in both locations to achieve locally lead solutions. The handover took place in the presence of key line offices and other Comprehensive Refugee Response (CRR) partners, including the Agency for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA), Mercy Corps, International Rescue Committee (IRC), Danish Refugee Council (DRC), and Development and Inter-Church Aid Commission (DICAC).  For more information on ReDSS capacity development activities in Somali Region, contact Guled Mohamud (g.ali@regionaldss.org).
Updated  ReDSS capacity development tools: ReDSS has updated our capacity development webpage to include additional information and resources on current training tools, as well as a calendar of events for future training. A durable solutions toolkit library of useful tools for programming practitioners has also been developed, while training tools from ReDSS Ethiopia durable solutions induction and solutions mainstreaming sessions have also been added to our website for members and partners to access. Further trainings will be organized to utilize these tools, but in the meantime, we encourage you to check them out for yourselves.
Coordination
ReDSS Ethiopia Mid-Year Review Meeting: ReDSS Ethiopia country unit held a mid-year review meeting with members on 15th July 2021. The meeting aimed at reviewing the success and challenges of the first half of the year, as well as to agree on the priorities and opportunities for collaboration during the second half of the year. You can find here the presentation from the mid-year review meeting which includes ReDSS planned activities over the remainder of the year.
