Bridging the Funding Gap to Support Needed Services for Students, Enhance Faculty Engagement and Provide Funding for Innovative Programs

Visiting Fulbright Scholar to Teach Business and Management at SCC

The Institute of International Education in New York City recently awarded Spokane Community College a Fulbright Student and Scholar Program grant of $34,375 for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Van Thi Thanh Dinh, comes to CCS from her home in Hanoi, Vietnam to serve as adjunct faculty in strengthening global curriculum in the SCC Business and Management Department. One of the goals is to provide students with enriched understanding of Asia-Pacific market institutions and cultural context to better prepare them for a future career in business, management, economics, and related fields. Several undergraduate courses at SCC may be bolstered with a global perspective, including: International Marketing, Leadership Training DECA, Small Business Planning, and International Economics.

Dr. Dinh has a PhD in Finance Seminars, Asset Pricing, and Advanced Econometrics with a primary specialization in Banking and Financial Training. She will teach courses on Business, Management, Economics, and Vietnamese business culture.

Dean of Business Hospitality and Information Technology Jeff Brown said, “SCC Department of Business and Legal Studies faculty look forward to collaborating with Dr. Dinh, sharing teaching strategies, and learning from both her strong academic background and her diverse cultural experiences. This is also a wonderful opportunity for SCC business students to learn and gain international perspective.”

Dr. Dinh will have the opportunity to fully participate in faculty department meetings, curriculum development discussions, faculty professional development opportunities, guest lectures, and other campus and community engagement. SCC faculty mentors will help to facilitate the Scholar’s engagement within the Department and the larger community. Dr. Dinh hopes to conduct some community forums, including a financial literacy workshop with board games and gamification techniques.

Dean of Global Education Hadda Estrada said, “I am convinced that the Fulbright Scholar in Residence program is a profound, formative, and unique experience. The Scholar and the institution are completely free to design a direction of exploration, empowering each participant to carry through and deliver the best results.”
Digital Literacy Grant Supports ESL Students
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at SCC recently won a $43,000, 15-month grant from the DSHS Office of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance Technology Access and Digital Inclusion Initiative. The grant is federally funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement and will assist eligible students in bridging the digital divide to increase access to critical services, supports and opportunities. Funds will be used to access technology and promote digital inclusion by addressing barriers caused by income restrictions, limited English proficiency, insufficient digital literacy skills and challenges navigating systems and services remotely.

The ESL program will use the funds to purchase and distribute laptops, software and Internet access to Limited English Pathways students. Funding will also help SCC develop and teach a digital literacy course, including technical support, tutoring, and more. With the grant funding, SCC staff and interpreters will provide services in the preferred language of most participants.

Stoja Saric, SCC ESL Coordinator, said, “Students are so excited about this class. They have been asking for it for a long time. We are finally able to provide them with a much-needed class that will help them build the skills they need in today’s online world.”
Student Emergency Assistance Grant Ramps Up

A car breakdown. A sudden job loss. A sick child without alternative caregiver options. All college students have the potential to face unexpected life events that threaten their financial capacity to continue progress towards their education plan. Setbacks like these are more likely to be significant financial emergencies for students living with very low income or with limited family support.

According to the #RealCollege Survey Report from May 2020, food insecurity, housing insecurity, and homelessness are overlapping concerns, with 64% of students at SCC experiencing at least one of these forms of basic needs insecurities in the past year.

The WorkForce Transitions Office at SCC recently received $400,000 (over two years) from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges’ Student Emergency Assistance Grant (SEAG). The SEAG Program provides funding for colleges to assist students experiencing unforeseen emergencies or situations that affect the student's ability to attend classes. The aim is to ensure that access to assistance is as low-barrier as possible and be inclusive of all students, regardless of whether they meet the traditional definition of “needy student.”

Amme Paluch, former Workforce Transitions Manager at SCC said, “Our plan is to have as seamless a process as possible so that students who have a need will get that need met and continue on in school and get the necessary supports in place to remove other potential barriers."

This student aid differs from others because the SEAG program does not require the FAFSA application or a disclosed “need” for eligibility, and it supports both credit and non-credit students. A very simple application process will ensure a quick turnaround on disbursing support to students.
