A Note from Alexis
After years of hectic travel schedules, long days of inspiring clients in skyscrapers with gorgeous views of big cities (while simultaneously dreaming of being home to savor the sweet outdoors of the Sierra Nevada mountains), I have found myself home for the last 17 months. At first it was luxurious, and I was savoring night after night of sleeping in my own comfy bed, connecting in a regular way with my family, and then it got … boring. My family and I have fallen into a routine, and the days are a lot of the same. Boredom has become my constant companion, which is a challenge for me. This emotion, boredom, feels in conflict with my values around gratitude and embracing each day with zest and enthusiasm.

zest!

As I set the intention to work through my boredom, I’ve been taking my own coaching medicine.
  • When I’m feeling an emotion I dislike, I lean into it and get curious. I ask, “What am I telling myself about this feeling?” With boredom, I tell myself, “I should be making the most of this time. I should be grateful to be home!” which leads to feeling worse.
  • So, I reframe my thinking to, “This feeling of boredom is a body beacon signaling a desire to mix things up! I can use this information to make a change.”
  • Finally, I challenge myself to do something about my current state. I say to myself, “Alexis, you have everything you need to change this situation. Get busy.”
My life doesn’t magically turn to fireworks and novelty, but this points me in the right direction and helps me feel back in control.
