Late summer vibes

It’s lovely here at Riverside right now, with late summer perennials in flower and grasses wafting in the breeze. It’s also a nice time to start thinking about some gardening projects for the autumn, such as planting bulbs or a new tree. Read on for inspiration...

Spring bulbs have arrived

Don’t wait until you see the crocuses, daffodils and tulips popping their heads up next spring to decide you want spring bulbs, come down to Riverside and get some today, ready to plant this autumn. From popular favourites to more unusual varieties, we have loads for you to choose from.

Bulbs are versatile things and can be planted in sun or shade, in the ground or in pots. To help you out, we’ve put together an in-depth tip sheet, telling you which bulbs grow best where and how to look after them. We also have a how-to guide to making a bulb lasagne - a method of layering bulbs that gives you continuous colour for months.

Riverside’s Upfest mural is complete!

In the last newsletter we told you about our Upfest mural at Riverside, being painted for us by the very talented botanical illustrator Hannah McVicar. Hannah has now finished work on the panel (which is also an eye-catching information point for our customers) and we think it looks just stunning. If you haven’t seen it in person yet we hope you’ll stop by soon to take a look!

Time for trees

We know many of you have been looking to buy trees recently and not finding many to choose from, as demand for garden trees has skyrocketed over the past year or so. The good news is our late summer tree delivery is on its way!

It will be all hands on deck here at Riverside to get them all out for you by the weekend of 4th/5th September. As usual, we’ll have a wide selection of both fruit and ornamental trees, including many perfectly suited to the smaller dimensions of typical city gardens. We anticipate that pressure on supplies will continue so would invite you to come sooner rather than later for the best choice!

Stonecrops for summer-into-autumn colour

Our selection of stonecrops, aka border sedums or ice plants (or in fact Hylotelephium for the Latin fans out there), is looking very pretty indeed right now. These plants are grown for their attractive, fleshy leaves, which come in tones of green, red and purple, as well as for their flowers in summer and autumn. The flowers are favourites of butterflies and bees, and the architectural seed heads can be left to stand over the winter (beautiful on a frosty morning).

If you’d like help with these, or any other plants in the garden centre, please come and have a chat with one of our friendly members of staff. We look forward to seeing you.

Happy to help.

If you have any questions at all then please feel free to contact us, we'd love to hear from you!
