Gingras Day Activities to be Held at Gingras Trading Post State Historic Site
PEMBINA, N.D. – Gingras Day will be held at Gingras Trading Post State Historic Site on Saturday, Sept. 4, with activities for all ages. The site will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, as site-provided seating will be limited. In the event of inclement weather, activities will be moved indoors.
Premiering at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. is “Red River Rendezvous,” a new family-friendly, hands-on fur trade activity that will have participants taking on the roles of 1800s fur trade groups. Teams barter and trade goods from the era as they learn about consumer goods and necessities from 200 years ago, their historic value, and how the items were used.
At 1 p.m. "Healing, Health, and Happiness Using Traditional Métis Medicines" will be presented by Métis medicine woman Wishkobizi Nibi Ikwe (To be sweet like the water woman)/Christy Goulet. Goulet will teach participants how to use raw barks, herbs, and roots to make teas and healing drinks that can be taken home. This hands-on event is appropriate for all ages.
Goulet is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota and has gone through ceremonial rite of passage. She teaches about the Métis traditional medicines, songs, and healing techniques used in the contemporary world.
Gingras Trading Post State Historic Site is located 1.5 miles northeast of Walhalla and is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. For more information about this site and upcoming events, go to history.nd.gov/events.
