Updates from the Therapeutic Innovation Networks (TINs)
During a usually quiet month of August over the summer period, we have been working hard to launch the next round of TIN Pilot Data Funding for Early Career Researchers.

We hope for this to go live at the start of September, so please do keep an eye on the TINs website for updates.
In the meantime, we would like to wish all Biologics applicants good luck while awaiting feedback!

Future TIN funding opportunities will be made live via the link below, where currently, information about previous awardees can be found.

Repurposing
Upcoming events from the Repurposing TIN
This webinar series will address some of the challenges in the Drug Repurposing space described during the seminars held during 2020. The focus of these new webinars will be on technological and commercial/regulatory aspects worth exploring in order to support the UCL community and will count on the invaluable contribution of external partners from industry, not-for-profit organisations, charities and patient groups.

Our first event (July 8th ) was on
”Computational Technology & AI in Drug Repurposing”, and the recording can be found on the TINs website.
We invite you to register for the following upcoming online events in this series:
Small Molecules
Opportunity for UCL researchers to obtain PROTAC or AUTAC for your research through the TINs
  1. Decide on a protein of interest.
  2. The protein of interest must have a small molecule ligand with either a crystal structure OR some structure-activity information or both.
  3. Engage with chemistry group at UCL to work out how to design how to design and synthesise the required molecule (this can be simple or very hard depending on the problem).
  4. Send PhD or postdoc researcher to the collaborating lab to synthesise the tool.
If you want to apply, please contact the Small Molecules TIN coordinator, Dr Laurent Dupays at l.dupays@ucl.ac.uk.
External Opportunities (Funding and Events)
MRC Experimental Medicine grants
  • Submission Deadline: 9th September 2021

The MRC are looking for applications from academically-led experimental medicine projects that are conducted in humans, based round a clearly articulated gap in understanding of human pathophysiology and have a clear path to clinical impact.

These grants will produce new mechanistic insights, identifying opportunities to modify disease pathways and enabling novel therapeutic or diagnostic approaches for future development.

The panel welcomes all disease areas and interventions. There is no limit to the amount of funding you can apply for or the length of your project.

The Translational Research Group (TRG) is offering support with this scheme. If you would like to apply and would like help/advise with your application for the best chances of success, please contact Pamela Tranter, TRG Head (p.tranter@ucl.ac.uk).

NC3Rs Grant Application Workshop – Meeting the expectations of the major funding bodies for pre-clinical research applications
  • Thursday 9 September 2 – 4pm via Zoom.
This free interactive workshop will cover:
  • Why funders like the MRC, BBSRC and the Wellcome Trust are paying more attention to experimental design and justification of animal numbers in grant applications.
  • How to make sure your applications meet funders’ expectations in this area.
  • How to estimate and justify appropriate animal numbers.
This workshop is relevant for any UCL researchers applying for grants or project licences involving the use of animals.

Venture Insight - Seminar series for Translational Researchers at UCL

This 3-seminar series (October 2021) will help UCL researchers better understand the suitability of venture capital (VC) as a translational funding option.
As part of UCL TRO's mission to demystify the translational funding landscape, we have joined forces with UCL’s own in-house venture fund, the UCL Technology Fund, where Simon Goldman will present on three topics along the venture fund journey to help all UCL academics better understand VCs, highlighting considerations for taking VC investment and improving chances of success.

Each session aims to overcome common challenges academics face when engaging with VCs.
