Dear Maynard Family,

A recent case study published by Rebuilding Local News breaks down the benefits of government intervention in the collapse of the local news industry. The article indicates that the Local Journalism Sustainability Act (recently introduced to the US Senate) would in particular provide a lifeline for news outlets in underserved communities. Read the case study below.

In Maynard program updates, we look forward to convening this year's Maynard 200 fellows tomorrow afternoon for an informal virtual summer session with former senior vice president at Disney Imagineering, Joe DiNunzio. He will discuss creative thinking and product development with fellows from all three areas of emphasis (entrepreneurship, executive leadership and storytelling). In the next newsletter edition, we'll share more on  the program's upcoming fall session.

With gratitude,
Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

Case Study: The impact of the Local Journalism Sustainability Act at The Afro-American
By Anna Brugmann, Rebuild Local News
"Journalism doesn’t need a hand out, like a stimulus. It needs a hand up, like a policy that augments and incentivizes the existing revenue-generating behaviors that support local journalism — a policy like the Local Journalism Sustainability Act."
