Earlier this month Midnight Feast was announced as the recipient of a Cultural Fund grant. We talked with our artistic associate, Duncan Ragg, about the process.
What is the Cultural Fund?
It’s a grant program. They give money to artists with really good ideas for something innovative. We won!
What happened?
At the beginning of the year, Screenrights asked for submissions to their annual grant program. We submitted something Duncan called ‘The Feast’, which is a training program for Midnight Feast artists to team up with creatives from Jungle Entertainment (Wakefield, Mr Inbetween, No Activity) and The Corinthian Food Store (Liberty St) to learn about collaborative writing, development, pitching, pathways to audience, casting, directing and editing on a budget.
What does that mean?
Next year, Midnight Feast will host professional filmmakers, including writers, directors, production executives, musicians and editors each week who will help develop our skills in those areas, and hopefully deepen our connections in the film industry.
Where does it lead?
Apart from getting to network with some cool people and learn some skills, at the end of the program each artist will get a chance to pitch their work to executives from Jungle and TCFS and to receive feedback on the strength of our ideas. Essentially, we get to pitch an idea for a film or a TV series, and to hear what’s working!
Overall, this fund will give us some agency over our filmmaking, but also a place at the table with some very well-connected partners.
