Caregiving in in the U.S. in 2020  · Poem for the lonely ·
Comfy items for the dying · Reviewing your health care proxy
We’ve talked a lot about the challenges of caregiving and the importance of self-care for those looking after loved ones. The number of unpaid caregivers has increased 22 percent over the past five years, making it more important than ever to support this group. Check out these illuminating statistics from AARP (view full report). If you are providing care for a loved one, Courage to Caregivers, Caregiver Action Network, and Love Labor Project (which is for young adult caregivers) all provide excellent resources.
We love this poem by Kelly Seymour. What a beautiful reminder for anyone who needs it today.
What should you have at a loved one’s bedside if a gradual death takes place? Cait Maddan, an end-of-life doula, offers some great suggestions to consider, including:
▪️Poems/faith-based readings/book passages
▪️Items for rituals - personal or spiritual
▪️Prayers
▪️Songs/Instrumentals
▪️Preferred sounds
▪️Designated loved ones
▪️Oils/aromatherapy/other pleasing smell
▪️A special pillow/blanket
▪️Photos
▪️Visual stimulation and lighting
▪️An animal companion
▪️Whatever other items bring comfort, promote peace, and enhance relaxation
It’s important to review your health care proxy at certain points in your life. The Conversation Project has a fantastic and comprehensive guide to choosing a health care proxy.  Access guide
