Another common theme in the feedback form responses was the resounding “meh” when folks talked about their self-care practices (or lack thereof). And boy, do I hear you on that one too.
But why, my fellow cherubs? Are we not worth it? Do we not owe it to ourselves and our favourite people to be our best selves?
One of the more personal reasons I started Saravat a few years ago was to reaffirm to myself that I was worthy of care, even if it felt as frivolous as skin cream. Because it wasn’t about the cream: it was about taking the time to take care of myself.
“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” This quote from Audre Lorde is probably used a little too often, but damn is she right.
Whether it’s smearing on some Saravat cream (I’m into it), or just making sure you drink enough water (also into it), take good care of yourself. We all depend on it.
