Greetings, friends! Hope you are all doing well. It's beginning to feel ever so slightly like fall here, and I'm sorry to see the summer go. We haven't gotten out and about as much as we would have liked (again), but there's much to be thankful for. Hope you are finding time and space to exercise your creativity in some shape or form!

WHAT'S UP

Redwork is my latest finish, and boy, was it a fun one! It was my response to the latest Quilt Improv Studio challenge, where the theme was Monochrome Dreams. I used nine different red solid fabrics, and like most improv, it evolevd as I placed segments on the design wall. That process of exploration is one of the things I love about the improvisational process.

WORTH A READ

ROUND-UP

Just one piece in her first solo exhibit, Exuberance in Cloth, Susan's "Yellow Lemur," was created from hand-dyed fabric, then quilted both by machine and hand. Susan describes her work as having 'dynamic geometry,' and I'm definitely a fan.

Linda created “The View From My Kitchen Window” after being inspired by the 100+ year old live oak in her backyard. I was interested to learn that the curves were hand-sewn and the strips were machine-sewn. I do love the movement in this piece!

"I love designing a quilt using a fairly simple and graphic block design, then see how I can use value and contrast to create interesting secondary shapes as the blocks come together. Plus I like to throw in little shots of color to enliven things!"  David's own description of his “Taki” (Japanese for waterfall) gives us a window into his creative world as he challenges himself "to see how interesting [he] can make a quilt using a primarily 2-color palette." Extremely interesting, I'd say!

"Allure" is such a perfect name for Jen/Jennifer Under the Juniper Tree's quilt. Her response to an improv repeating pattern prompt with the #beeutifullymodernquilt
bee, she chose to use three different patterns to such great effect. Her use of color is equally inspired, don't you think?

"Which Way is Up?" Truly! Heather's quilt was made almost entirely with her hand-dyed fabrics. She began with strip sets, some of which were sliced on the diagonal, and along the way, added in wonky oval units. All shapes were free-hand cut, a look she loves. Indeed, so do I.

IN-STUDIO

Can't help but share one more finish from my own studio - my very first SewTogether Bag! Have you made one? I've long been intrigued by them but they seemed pretty intimidating. It took Julia/Red Rainboots Handmade to host a sewalong, and suddenly the time seemed right. It was just the hand-holding I needed, as Julia provided such helpful videos of every step. The pattern is by Michelle/SewDemented, and it is ingenious. Check out my blog post for more photos and to see my own personal touch!

GOTTA LOVE IT!

Did you catch Allie/Exhausted Octopus share her "Quilting Speed Run" in her Instagram Stories a while back? In just 18 hours of working time from start to finish (with breaks to eat and sleep) she made a beautiful Rhythm Quilt, a pattern by Lo & Behold Stitchery. Gotta say, I was impressed, and what a beautiful finish.

P.S. I just learned about this upcoming event a few days ago, and I think I'm IN! Hosted by a group of Finnish quilters
[Tiina @tilkunviilaaja
Pinar @tilkkunen
Pia @organisaattori, & Irina @nordiccrafter],
there will also be several 'guest experts' who will share their insights on stripes. Sounds fun, right?
