As the U.S. military exits Afghanistan, we watched the situation deteriorate as the Taliban quickly took control this month. Many Afghans are likely to face persecution, including Christians and other minorities, allies who assisted the U.S. military, and women and girls who may have pursued education or other activities not approved by the Taliban. Join us in prayer and in advocacy this month for the people of Afghanistan.

Action Alert: Expand Refugee Protections for Afghans

“In recent days, the Taliban entered Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, seizing control as the Afghan government collapsed. Tens of thousands of our Afghan allies are in imminent danger, as attacks from the Taliban on Afghan nationals who supported the U.S. mission have increased, and violence against Afghan women and children is at an all-time high.” As the U.S. completes its withdrawal from Afghanistan, take action now to urge your Representatives to expand refugee protections for Afghan allies and Afghans fleeing persecution and violence.

Afghan SIV Update

For months, advocates and Members of Congress from both parties have called on the Biden administration to evacuate the tens of thousands of Afghan nationals who worked alongside U.S. forces and who qualify for Special Immigrant Visas (SIV). With an average wait time of three years, more than 18,000 Afghan allies have had their applications pending.  About 2,000 interpreters were evacuated before the Taliban entered Kabul, but thousands still remain and are in danger of retribution from the Taliban. Urge President Biden to act now to save our allies.

Title 42 Continues

At the beginning of August, the Biden administration extended Title 42, a policy that has allowed migrants to be expelled, many without a chance to apply for asylum. If you've been following along recently, you already know that seeking asylum is a right under both U.S. and international law.

We have the resources and know-how to protect public health AND protect people seeking safety at the border. Join advocates fighting to end this policy!

Pathway to Citizenship

This Fall, through the budget process, Congress will have the opportunity to pass a pathway to citizenship for farmworkers, other essential workers, and people with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Recent legal decisions and the COVID-19 pandemic have demonstrated the critical need for a permanent legislative solution that will protect the lives and families of millions of undocumented immigrants. Urge your Members of Congress to prioritize a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, TPS-holders, and essential workers. And if you live in Michigan, join us in calling Michigan’s Senators every Tuesday to urge them to support a budget package that includes a pathway to citizenship.

Immigrants in the Olympics

The Tokyo Olympics began on July 23. Included in the competitors is the Refugee Olympic Team-the second refugee team in history, made up of 29 stateless athletes. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said the team is “... a message that these forcibly displaced people are an enrichment to all our societies and that we should embrace them like we do in the Olympic Games, to show all our unity in all our diversity." Read more about these athletes’ stories.

Change the Conversation/In Case You Missed It

We've been working hard to spread the truth about the blessings of immigrants in our country and to counter myths that have the power to turn into policy that harms our immigrant brothers and sisters.

We can’t do it without you. Help continue this important work.
