For its forthcoming virtual tour of the Acropolis in Athens, Flyover Zone has put together a dream team of experts. They have been busily at work since the fall of 2020, and their work will soon come to a climax. The team is led by Jenifer Neils, Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. The 3D model of the site, including the Acropolis hill, was made by Lasha Tskondia, Flyover’s Director of 3D Modeling. The project manager is Sam Holzman, a newly appointed Assistant Professor of Art and Archaeology at Princeton. The script was written by Rebecca Levitan, a doctoral student at UC Berkeley as well as a fellow of the American Academy in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Our epigraphist is Robert Pitt, a professor at College Year in Athens.
The Centennial Park Conservancy in Nashville, TN has kindly granted us permission to digitize casts of the Parthenon in its collection as well as the 42-foot statue of Athena by great American sculptor Alan LeQuire. The Skulpturhalle in Basel granted us permission to digitize all its casts of the reliefs of the Temple of Athena Nike, the Sacred Maidens of the Erechtheion as well as the Parthenon reliefs and metopes...Which brings us to the subject of this article: giving you a peek behind the scenes to see some examples of the work in progress in restoring the Parthenon’s metopes.
The metope project features two amazing members of our dream team: Kathy Schwab, one of the world’s leading experts on the metopes and a professor of Art History & Visual Culture, and Curator of the Plaster Cast Collection at Fairfield University; and our intrepid and talented Art Director, Mohamed Abdelaziz.
In what follows, we will first present a recent interview of Kathy Schwab and we will follow that with some examples of the Schwab-Abdelaziz collaboration. I think we can already safely say that it is going to result in a unique, new restoration of the Parthenon metopes that will long be studied by scholars and enjoyed by the general public.
