Work to start at Abney Park
The Abney Park restoration project is due to start on 6 September. Hoarding will be erected at the Stoke Newington High Street Entrance, and access will be restricted to a new dedicated walkway. The Abney Park Trust Office will be closed for the duration of the project, and the Trust will operate out of a temporary office.

The project will see Abney Park’s historic chapel brought back into use as a venue, the development of a new café and classroom at the park’s main entrance, as well as a new accessible entrance on Church Street. Work to restore the interior of the Chapel will include a new floor, new toilet facilities, electricity, lighting and new seating at balcony level. The new classroom and café will provide refreshment for park visitors, as well as interpretation of the site’s incredible history. An environmentally friendly heat pump will be installed in the park to provide heat and hot water to the park’s new buildings.

The improvements are due to be complete by Spring 2023.  Thank you for your patience during the works

New Springfield Venue now available to book
The Glass House is Hackney's newest community venue, based in the recently refurbished Springfield Park. Work on the building is complete, and you can now book it for weddings, functions and other community uses. To arrange a viewing or book the space, visit hackneyvenues.com/the-glass-house.

New toilets for Haggerston Park

Work to refurbish the toilets in Haggerston Park is due to start in October. We hope to include a 'Changing Places' facility as part of the refurbishment. Changing Places toilets have more space for disabled people to use the facility comfortably.

We would love to know what potential users of the facility need and to hear your thoughts about how to resolve some of these challenges.

The short survey is intended for anyone with a physical disability/additional needs, parents/carers who may have a child with a physical disability or additional needs or any other people who may have a say (e.g. leisure provider, member of staff in a school etc.). Please complete the survey here.

Cassland Gardens Renamed

Kit Crowley Gardens is the new name for the former Cassland Road Gardens after residents voted for the space to be named after the local role model.

The move is part of a wider review of the names of local landmarks, streets, buildings and public spaces in Hackney to ensure they reflect the borough’s diverse history, as part of the Council’s anti-racism programme.

Kathleen ‘Kit’ Crowley was born in 1918 to an English mother and Barbadian father. Kit experienced poverty and racism, and growing up where survival often relied on the goodness of neighbours shaped her resilience and sense of community spirit. You can read more about Kit here.

New cycle path for Millfields
Work will start shortly on a new walking and cycling path in Millfields park. The route is part of a new cycleway which will run from Lea Bridge to Dalston, and will feature protected cycle lanes on Lea Bridge Road and Lea Bridge roundabout, as well as a new tree-lined boulevard for pedestrians and cyclists in Millfields Park. More.

Growing Communities Open Day
Growing Communities will be opening the gates of their organic market garden in Clissold Park to visitors on Saturday 18 September (11am-4pm) for a special free event.

Visitors will be able to look round the thriving organic plot, pick up growing tips from expert grower Sophie and learn about volunteering at the site and at Growing Communities' other market garden in Springfield Park.

On the day, you’ll also be able to try snacks and cakes made with local organic fruit and vegetables from the Growing Communities veg scheme and farmers’ market. There will be recipe cards to take home too so you can make the same dishes for yourself.

History corner
Albion Square is a delightful green space nestled in between Dalston and Haggerston, close to Stonebridge Gardens. Sir William Middleton commissioned the building of it in 1844. The map below from 1831 shows just how undeveloped the area around Albion Square was at the time. The location of the square is indicated with the red rectangle.

The land around Albion Square in 1831.

It was not originally accessible by the public, but in 1898 it was acquired and saved from dereliction through grants from the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association (MPGA), the Metropolitan Board of Works and the London County Council (LCC).

The new garden was laid out by Fanny Wilkinson, a landscape gardener working for the MPGA. She worked for the association for 19 years, during which period she designed 75 public gardens for London. Albion Square was opened to the public on 12th July 1899 by Lord Meath, Chairman of the MPGA. You can read more about the site's history in the Albion Square Management Plan.
