It’s ICAP’s four-year anniversary, and we couldn’t be more pleased to share our 2021 Annual Report!  In these pages, you’ll find examples of the work that your support has enabled over the past year, building on our first three.  From our efforts to protect our democracy against extremist and unlawful militia threats to our work reforming the criminal legal system, protecting the rights of immigrants and vulnerable populations, and defending the separation of powers, you will see some of everything in the Annual Report.
And we haven’t stopped – since the Annual Report went to print, ICAP filed a brief supporting the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in its efforts to be treated equally to the men’s team; continued its fight against unconstitutional fines and fees assessed against the poor with an appeal in the Tenth Circuit of a lower court’s erroneous decision; and sought the full Fifth Circuit’s review of a case involving the tasing of a disabled student by a school police officer.

In support of ICAP’s continued efforts to combat militia extremist violence, ICAP’s Executive Director Mary McCord published Dispelling the Myth of the Second Amendment in a symposium produced by the Brennan Center for Justice.  ICAP also continues to work with federal and state officials on using existing tools, and developing new ones, to address the private militia threat.

Finally, ICAP is delighted to welcome two new senior counsel to its team.  Elizabeth Cruikshank joined us in July from private practice, where her pro bono caseload included working with ICAP’s new Supreme Court Director, Kelsi Brown Corkran, on Taylor v. Riojas, a challenge to inhumane prison conditions that marked the first time in 16 years that the Supreme Court denied qualified immunity to a government officer.  Joseph Mead joined the team just this week after having been a tenured professor in the law and public policy programs at Cleveland State University, and with more than a decade of experience litigating structural and constitutional issues with the ACLU of Ohio and prior experience at the U.S. Department of Justice.  We are very excited to work with Elizabeth and Joe and can’t wait to share their accomplishments at ICAP!

Keep up with ICAP on Twitter via @GeorgetownICAP; and suggest what we should take on next via reachICAP@georgetown.edu.

With thanks for your continued support, The ICAP Team
