 30-08-2021

As millions of children return to school across the European region, where the highly transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant is dominant, the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Europe and Central Asia Regional Office call for schools to stay open and be made safer by adopting measures to minimize transmission of the virus.

WHO/Europe and IFRC sign MoU to help countries achieve health for all

07-09-2021
WHO/Europe and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) today reaffirmed and strengthened their cooperation with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Copenhagen, Denmark.  Ms Birgitte Bischoff Ebbesen, IFRC’s Regional Director for Europe and Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe jointly signed the MoU. This further cements the existing relationship between the 2 organizations, who have cooperated closely throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The MoU provides a framework for supporting countries in the Region to achieve universal health coverage through the coordinated efforts of ministries of health, the IFRC, National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and WHO/Europe, including WHO country offices.

Statement – WHO/Europe: stagnating COVID-19 vaccination uptake requires urgent action

30-08-2021

The epidemiological picture in the WHO European Region, comprising 53 countries, is mixed. We now have 64 million confirmed cases and 1.3 million deaths. Thirty-three Member States report a greater than 10% increase in 14-day case incidence. This high transmission is deeply worrying – particularly in the light of low vaccination uptake in priority populations in a number of countries. Several countries are starting to observe an increased burden on hospitals and more deaths. Last week, there was an 11% increase in the number of deaths in the Region – with one reliable projection expecting 236 000 deaths in Europe by 1 December.  Read the full article

Early detection of cervical and breast cancers urgently needed in Newly Independent States

08-09-2021
Women living in the Newly Independent States (NIS) who develop cervical or breast cancer are likely to have their cancers diagnosed much later than in other European countries, and cases are on the rise. This is the finding of a review of population-based cervical and breast cancer statistics produced by cancer registries in the 10 countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. “Our results confirm that current breast and cervical cancer early detection practices in the NIS are far from optimum,” says Dr Ariana Znaor from the Cancer Surveillance Section of the International Agency for Research ln Cancer (IARC), who led the team of researchers.
