Latest News in Healthtech Innovation

Barts Health NHS Trust has utilised AI technology to scan 14.2 million documents to find and identify patients with diabetic foot disease who otherwise might have been unknown. The programme, utilising technology from Clinithink which uses artificial intelligence tools to find meaning in unstructured medical notes and documents, identified 61,756 patients with diabetes and, of these, 3,119 patients with DFD. Reviewing this volume of document would have taken a clinician over a hundred years. Mr Sandip Sarkar, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Barts Health, added: “This will enable us to focus our precious clinical resource on those patients likely to benefit most from early intervention, which will also reduce the burden on hard-pressed acute services”

Background
According to the World Economic Forum, half of the world’s population lacks access to basic health care. Africa has over 500 million of these people, where many pregnant women die in the hands of unskilled traditional birth attendants.
MobiKlinic Uganda was formed to ease access to health care for people in last mile areas in Uganda and across Africa. Mobiklinic won the global Sandoz hack as best health access idea 2019 and last year was crowned Uganda’s best innovation of 2020 by CEO Summit Uganda.

What does Mobiklinic do?
Mobiklinic empowers community health systems. It trains and deploys community members as community health providers (CHPs). It further goes on to innovate a digital safety net for these community health workers. The MobiKlinic app is an android app that community health workers use as a one stop center for health delivery. It links them to senior medics for guidance, links them to health centers for integrated referrals and most recently, the organization is incorporating biometrics in their digital solution that will ease patient identification in these last mile villages.
