Welcome back Longhorns! We are looking forward to another year filled with passionate and hard working students, staff, and faculty taking action on local, regional, and global sustainability issues.

We are especially excited to announce that UT-Austin will once again be a Host Institution for the Global Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education taking place virtually October 12-14. Save the date because all students, faculty, and staff will be able to register for FREE access to three full days of live content and networking, plus access to all on-demand content through the end of the year. We encourage faculty to consider integrating a session into your courses. A full schedule is now available and we'll be in touch soon with details on how to register for free.

ENGAGEMENT

Texas Sustainability Open House

Students stop to talk with sustainability staff under two pop-up tents.
As part of Longhorn Welcome, UT sustainability staff and student interns hosted a Texas Sustainability Open House. New and returning students learned about the wide variety of ways they can get involved in campus sustainability while enjoying a local, zero waste popsicle. Check out photos from the event HERE.

OPERATIONS

UT Energy Stewards Conserve Energy and Save Money

A UT Energy Steward gives a tour of a building's mechanical room.
The Energy Management and Optimization division of UT Utilities and Energy Management recently completed a commissioning project in the Peter O'Donnell Jr. (POB) building. This included replacing two chilled water valves and adding return air humidity sensors which allow for better cooling and humidity control. Their efforts reduced total annualized building energy use by 9% equating to over $17,000 in yearly savings. Kudos!

EMISSIONS

IPCC Report and Local Climate Planning Update

With the release of the latest IPCC report, climate change is at the forefront of the international conversation. Jackson School's Dr. Ginny Cantania shared her perspective on how climate change will impact Texas and what we can do to combat it.

The City of Austin's Climate Equity Plan is headed to Austin City Council later this fall, where it will be presented in consideration for adoption. UT Office of Sustainability continues to work with campus stakeholders on UT's own Sustainability Plan and you can provide input HERE.
