Exhibitions
Tides Institute & Museum of Art
Maine Bicentennial Book
As part of Maine’s Bicentennial, the Tides Institute & Museum of Art mounted an exhibition of works from its collections ranging in date from 1820 to the present. In addition, the Tides Institute will publish a Bicentennial book featuring 100 works from its collections and the stories behind the works and how they came into the Tides Institute’s collection. Each week, one of the selected works will be featured in CulturePass.
This week’s piece is a gelatin silver photographic print, “Staircase, George Capen House, 16 Key Street, Eastport, Maine,” by photographer, Thaddeus Holownia, taken in 2015. The photograph was part of a large scale nine year effort by Holownia to photograph the architecture, landscape and community of Eastport, Maine from 2009 to 2017. Using large format cameras and film photography, Holownia took nearly 1,000 photographs of building exteriors and interiors, architectural details and wider streetscapes and landscapes of Eastport. Nearly 200 of the photographs were incorporated into the 218 page hardbound book, Eastport, with accompanying thematic essays by New Brunswick architect, John Leroux, co-published by Holownia’s Anchorage Press and the Tides Institute & Museum of Art (TIMA) in 2018. Holownia was born in England in 1949 and immigrated to Canada in 1954. For 41 years he taught photography at Mount Allison University in Sackville New Brunswick. Holownia’s exquisite large format photographs of the forests, rivers and architecture of Atlantic Canada and other selective part of the world have been exhibited and published extensively including a major retrospective exhibition of his work, The Nature of Nature, The Photographs of Thaddeus Holownia 1976–2016, at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Holownia is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and he received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for High Achievement in the Visual Arts from artsNB as well as the Order of New Brunswick. The Eastport photograph was a gift to TIMA by the photographer.

Artist Exhibit: Lauren Luloff
at Lubec Landmarks Mulholland Gallery - Lubec
September 9 - 28
Lauren Luloff will be the featured artist at the Mulholland Gallery in Lubec from September 9 - 28. Opening reception will be on September 11 from 5 - 7 pm.
Luloff layers collaged fabric and paint onto bed sheets, creating delicate yet expressive paintings. For Luloff, the sheets reference “home, intimacy, dreams, and drama” and imbue her works with a host of formal qualities, “their crumpling acting as an impasto swoosh, or creating chiaroscuro,” she says. “Patterns from the sheets offer a harder edge line in contrast with my organic brush marks.” Her boldly expressive use of mixed-media harkens to Robert Rauschenberg’s “Combines”, while her color treatment has been compared to that of Abstract Expressionist Helen Frankenthaler. By infusing personal significance into each work, Luloff depicts moments of fleeting, hazily beautiful remembrance. See more of her work here.
