September 30, a national day of reflection
With the residential school revelations over the past few months fresh in our minds, we pause on September 30, to remember the lives lost and futures stolen through the residential school system. We encourage you to take this day to read and reflect on the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to educate yourself on the history of residential schools, to help young people understand the legacy of the residential school system, and to take time to listen to the stories of survivors and their families. We also encourage you to learn about Orange Shirt Day, and how Phyllis Webstad's own story inspired it.

The New Westminster Museum and Archives and the NWPL present the next event in our 2021 Indigenous Film Series, creating space for the important work of Truth and Reconciliation. Members of the local Indigenous community will lead the discussion session on September 21, 6:00-7:00.
This month's film is the documentary, Nisga’a Dancing in Both Worlds. Film makers John Bassett and Rosalind Farber made numerous trips to Nisga’a territory beginning in 2003, and this film documents Nisga’a history, their struggle and life since the Nisga’a treaty was signed in May 2000.

After an incredibly successful summer in New Westminster parks, our programs for children and families are set to return this fall! We look forward to bringing back Babytime, Storytime, Reading Buddies, and our Young Readers Book Club. We will not be able to host any 'in-person' programing for September, while we take time to learn more about how recent public health orders and guidelines are to be managed here at the library. September Art Exhibit - Victoria Mitchell
|
|
|
Inspired by body structure, kinetics, and connections to our natural surroundings, Victoria Mitchell explores emotional, visceral, and environmental sensitivities through her exhibit, Inktricate. This exhibit features new art work in ink, created during 2020-2021, with both abstract and representational drawings and paintings.
Blind or partially sighted visitors can access a visual description of the exhibit or check it out beforehand on the art at the library website.

Holidays and Service Updates

The library will be closed on Sunday September 5 and Monday September 6 for the Labour Day Holiday, and Thursday, September 30 in recognition of Truth and Reconciliation Day.
After Labour Day, the library's hours will be changing, and the Main Branch will be open several evenings a week. Check out the new schedule here.
As of September 7, we are returning to a 7 day hold period. That means items will be held for you for one week only (down from 2 weeks). We hope you will enjoy getting your items faster, and allowing people down the list to enjoy them too!
We continue to adapt to new public health orders. Currently masks are required in all indoor public areas, so that means the library too. As we go to press, more information is still being refined about further requirements, so check out our COVID page for all updated info, or follow us on social media @NWPLibrary.
