FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
La Comunidad Exhibit Opens in Alice C. Sabatini Gallery
(TOPEKA) – La Comunidad (The Community) opens in the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library's Alice C. Sabatini Gallery Friday, September 3 and runs through November 21, 2021. From visual to performing arts – murals, paintings, sculpture, dance, music, costumes and lowrider cars – Latino artists in Topeka are flourishing. By mixing cultural traditions with contemporary stories, this group of artists showcases the depth of talent and vision in the community.

"Community is bigger than geography or family, it’s about a shared experience – the shared experience of La Comunidad," said Zan Popp curator of exhibitions.

The following artists are featured in this exhibit:

  • Ballet de Folklorico de Topeka - This local dance troupe has been performing Mexican Folkloric dancing since 1976.
  • Michael Chavez - Chavez's paintings depict the challenges and promises of migration.
  • Jamie Colon - As a muralist, Colon's work highlights the strong Mexican-American community in Topeka's Oakland area, immigration and family.
  • Mario Garcia - "With my use of colors and detail, I aim to emphasize the presence of Mexican traditions and culture.”
  • Osbaldo Gonzalez - "My family trace their lineage to the Tének and Xi’ui people of the Huasteca region and it is from here where I draw much of the inspiration for my work. I employ coil handbuilding techniques passed down by generations while also trying to revitalize some of the styles and patterns lost after the Spanish conquest of the Huasteca."
  • Huascar Medina - Medina is the 2019-2021 Poet Laureate of Kansas. His poems can be found in his collections How to Hang the Moon and Un Mango Grows in Kansas.
  • Vivian Moser - "I have found that my preferred art is craft and I know craft can be art. Traditional arts and crafts provide communities with narrative storytelling, coping skills, wellness through flow states, community building, traditional healing practices, and highlights the importance of traditional knowledge and wisdom."
  • Stephanie Munoz-O'Neil - As a painter Munoz-O'Neil is inspired by the buildings, river and landscapes of her childhood in Topeka's Oakland area.
  • Joey Rocha  - Joey Rocha’s art focuses on family, religion and working the land. His Kansas roots play strongly into the narratives of his paintings.
  • Luke Rocha - Luke Rocha is a self-taught artist who creates sculptures, installations, publications and collages from a wide range of found materials and media. The materials he used to create his art carry a history.
  • Andy Valdivia - Valdivia has painted five murals for Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish all depicting the heritage between Mexico and the Oakland community in Topeka, Kansas.
