CTBMB Conference in Mission Beach

After a year of lockdowns and virtual conferences, we are going to attempt an in-person meeting for CTBMB members.  COVID willing, this conference will be held from Friday afternoon to Sunday lunchtime (29nd-31st October) at Castaways Resort in Mission Beach.  The conference will showcase research from across our themes and will also include a session on building our Tropical Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology community.

The centre will be providing accommodation and meals but delegates must organize their own transport to and from the venue.

Click here to register via EventBrite

Please note that numbers are strictly limited.   Please register early to avoid disappointment.  If for any reason you register but need to cancel, please let us know ASAP so we can reallocate your ticket.

Member Publications

We use google scholar to keep track of CTBMB member publications and highlight new and notable work in each newsletter. Please consider adding your CTBMB member affiliation next time you publish as this will allow us to feature your work and include it in our publication list. The best way to do this is to include the “Centre for Tropical Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology” in one of your addresses for publication.

This month we would like to highlight five new publications from centre members:

Downie, A.T., Leis, J.M., Cowman, P.F., McCormick, M.I., Rummer, J.L., 2021. The influence of habitat association on swimming performance in marine teleost fish larvae. Fish Fish. https://doi.org/10.1111/faf.12580

McConnell, H., Andrews, T.D., Field, M.A., 2021. Efficacy of computational predictions of the functional effect of idiosyncratic pharmacogenetic variants. PeerJ 9, e11774.

O’Brien, P.A., Andreakis, N., Tan, S., Miller, D.J., Webster, N.S., Zhang, G., Bourne, D.G., 2021. Testing cophylogeny between coral reef invertebrates and their bacterial and archaeal symbionts. Mol. Ecol. 30, 3768–3782.

Saggiomo, S.L., Firth, C., Wilson, D.T., Seymour, J., Miles, J.J., Wong, Y., 2021. The Geographic Distribution, Venom Components, Pathology and Treatments of Stonefish (Synanceia spp.) Venom. Mar. Drugs 19. https://doi.org/10.3390/md19060302

ABACBS Conference

The COMBINE/ABACBS 2021 Annual Meeting will be run under a hybrid model this year. This means that in-person meetings will be held at hubs across Australia and all talks will be Zoomed live.  The conference runs through November 22-26, and is hosted by the University of Tasmania.  This is the premier bioinformatics conference in Australia and this year it will be joining up with the annual Phylomania meeting later on the week and convened by Professor Michael Charleston.

Call for Abstracts and Registration are now open.  Visit https://www.abacbs.org/conference2021 to find out more.

QCIF Roadshow

Are you curious to know how QCIF could help your research? QCIF are running an information session about their resources and services for researchers at JCU on September 6th, 10-1130.

Registration is mandatory for contact tracing and maximum room capacity restrictions. Please register here:https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/qcif-roadshow-james-cook-university-tickets-166127342353

All welcome, including research staff, HDR students and research support staff. Please join us face-to-face in Room A001-018, JCU Cairns or via Zoom (see below for link).

Australian Biocommons Events

Australian Biocommons is continuing their online webinars and workshops and have a great lineup of content covering topics from comparative genomics to machine learning.  Currently this includes a workshop on online data analysis with Galaxy Australia (Sept 9) and another on working with genomic sequences in R (Sept 23).

Visit the Australian Biocommons events page to see the line up and register for events.

Townsville and Cairns Coding Communities
The Townsville and Cairns coding groups (codeR) are a great place to learn and share expertise in anything related to R, programming and using the HPC.

Whether you are in Townsville or Cairns you can join the meetings on Mondays at 11 on Zoom.  New members are encouraged to join the slack channel for updates (https://coder-tsv.slack.com/), follow the group on twitter (https://twitter.com/codertsv) and check the group website https://codertsv.github.io/ for access to past presentations.

The community are always looking for people to give presentations.  And have some very nice coffee mugs to give away to those who present and/or attend the sessions
ABACBS Seminar Series

The Australian Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Society (ABACBS) has started its national seminar series again for 2021.

Brought to you through the magic of zoom, this series has a speaker lineup of the best bioinformaticians and computational biologists in Australia.

Talks are 12pm-1pm AEST. Register at https://abacbs.org/seminarzoom to get access to the zoom link.
COMBINE Student Society

COMBINE is the student arm of ABACBS.  They run an annual symposium as well as a range of other events for bioinformatics students in Australia.  Find out more at https://www.combine.org.au/

COMBINE are also looking for student representatives from Queensland to join the committee.  This is a great way to build your professional network and boost your CV.  If you are interested send email to combine@combine.org.au
T-shirts

We still have a large stock of T-shirts available to give away to CTBMB members.  This includes the 2018 polo style shirt and the 2019 cotton T-shirt.

If you'd like a shirt contact Ira (ira.cooke@jcu.edu.au) if you are in Townsville, or Matt (matt.field@jcu.edu.au) if you are in Cairns.
