Arrangements for the start of the 2020-21 academic year (September)
Dear Parents/Carers

Start/finish times of the College Day

As there are different start and finish times for different year groups in the College, I just wanted to remind you all the relevant times next year for each year group:
  • Years 7-10: Start at 08.30 and finish at 15.00 (with enrichment opportunities after College)
  • Years 11, 12 and 13: 08.30 and finish at 16.00 (with Champions Hour opportunity from 1600-1700)
Covid Update

Testing
Staff and students will not be expected to continue their home testing over the summer break, they will however need to start this process again in September. To support the testing process, we have been advised by the Department for Education that all students will be expected to undertake two monitored, onsite Lateral Flow Tests at the beginning of term. As you can imagine this is a large undertaking and the plan for this is as follows:

Test 1
Students will be invited to attend the site in tutor groups to undertake test 1 in the Sports Hall in a similar process as previously. Students will come in, receive their test and then return home, they will return to college to start their learning the following day. We will immediately contact any parents of students who provide a positive test result and log the result on the Test & Trace system.

Test 1 Schedule

Test 2 Schedule
Students will undertake test 2 during their normal school day on Thursday 9th September for Years 7, 11 & Post-16 and Friday 10th September for Years 8, 9 & 10. They will be called in class order to minimise the disruption of the school day.

Consent for testing
Most of you have already provided consent for this process, and you will not need to do so again. We will be asking our parents of our new Year 7’s to provide their consent when they join us for the Summer School. Those who do not attend Summer School will be sent a link to a survey so that they can provide consent.

Routines
As I am sure you are aware, we have implemented strict Covid compliant routines to keep our students as safe as possible during the pandemic. Many of these will continue, e.g. sanitisation, ventilation, cleaning/hygiene routines. We will update the details of these arrangements on our website (http://www.sjhcsc.co.uk/parents/covid-compliant-adjustments) once final guidance has been received prior to the start of the academic year, however, the current guidance has changed on a few areas for which we wish to make you aware:
  • Bubbles: there will no longer be an expectation for schools to maintain year group bubbles.
  • Catering: having no year group bubbles will allow us to open the dining hall as normal, with students being able to purchase food/drinks onsite (using the Pin system at the tills), through parents using Parent Pay. If you need a reminder of your parent Pay log-in details, please contact our admin team via e-mail (admin@sjhcsc.co.uk). New Year 7 students will receive their Parent Pay log-in details shortly. The process for students entitled to free school meals will also revert back to using the Pin system that is used when ordering food, parents will no longer have to pre-order on Parent Pay.
  • Self-isolation: current advice from 16th August onwards states that students under 18 and any adults who have had 2 doses of the covid vaccine will no longer need to isolate if they are a close contact of someone who has tested positive for coronavirus. Close contacts will be encouraged to take a PCR test, but they will not need to self-isolate whilst they are waiting for the result. If the PCR is positive, they must isolate, while Test & Trace works with them to identify any close contacts.
Expectations

Attendance
We understand that school closures and the need to self-isolate has had a detrimental impact on the levels of absence from College for our students. However, from September our normal high standards of attendance will be in place as will our procedures in terms of reducing student absence, particularly in light of the valuable time that students have missed in the classroom. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is for every student to attend every single lesson that they possibly can.

Behaviour expectations
We have been delighted at how the majority of our students have embraced the recent changes to our Conduct for Learning policy. The move to disruption free learning and the one warning system has meant that our classrooms continue to be focussed on academic progress, while our break and lunch times, free from the mobile devices, has seen students socialising and playing together in a healthy way. Just a reminder these expectations will remain in place from September so please ensure you and your child are up to speed with them. Please see our Conduct for Learning policy for more details: http://www.sjhcsc.co.uk/policies.

Uniform
The Pastoral Leaders have recently written to you confirming our expectations with regards to uniform, equipment, and jewellery. We want to make school uniform purchases as easy, simple and cheap as possible so we have highlighted what we deem as acceptable and unacceptable uniform. Before making any new purchases, especially with regards to skirts, trousers and plain black school shoes (no trainers from September) please check our Uniform section on our College website: http://www.sjhcsc.co.uk/parents/uniform-policy

Homework /Google classroom
As we start the new academic year, we would appreciate your support in helping students to organise themselves with their homework.  All work that students complete outside of school time helps them to apply and extend their learning, ultimately helping them to become independent and successful learners.  There are different expectations for each Key Stage, in terms of the number of tasks set each week and the amount of time that students are expected to spend on each task but, in general terms, students should expect to complete some homework each evening.

All homework tasks are set on Google Classroom so please be ready to check that your child can access their account and all of their Classrooms at home. It would be worth you making a note of their login details in case they have any difficulty accessing their homework. Students are also expected to record their homework in their planners.  We ask that parents support students by checking the assignments on Google Classroom and ensuring that tasks are completed to a high standard, by the deadline.
