Save the date! Type Tuesday, 14 September

Hello from the Eye studio, where we’re all double-vaccinated, and the windows are open to keep the air moving. On a more sanguine note, we have been obliged to raise our prices, the first such change in thirteen years. Thankfully, we are again able to take orders from the EU – select ‘Europe’ from the drop-down menu. (Please note that the correct VAT amount will not be applied until you have entered your address for delivery.)

Our team is deep in production for the forthcoming type special issue, no. 102, packed with type design, typography and lettering from around the world. Maria Spann is taking portraits, and many distinguished writers from around the world, including Jan Middendorp, Véronique Marrier, Alessandro Colizzi, Elizabeth Resnick, Thilo von Debschitz, Indra Kupferschmidt, Anoushka Khandwala and Rick Poynor have filed their copy.

The next Type Tuesday is at 6:30pm on 14 September 2021, with several designers who will be featured in the next Type special issue of Eye: November (Mumbai), Laura Meseguer (Barcelona) and Thomas Huot-Marchand (Nancy). Please save the date and look out for further newsletters (and on our social media channels) for the full details and Eventbrite link. This online-only event – in support of St Bride library, as always – will be limited to no more than 100 participants, so we recommend early booking.

Books received #46.

The latest blog post, Books received #46 (see above), features Dosłownie by Janusz Górski; Eco Worrier by James Marsh; and Data Justice and COVID-19: Global Perspectives. And in two years’ time, London’s re-named House of Illustration (formerly based in Granary Square, King’s Cross) will be moving into the new Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration at New River Head (see below). In ‘A new space for illustration’, Clare Walters writes about what will become the world’s largest public arts space dedicated to ‘art with a job to do’.

Triboro’s brand applications for the Café Standard at the Standard Hotel East Village in New York (2014).

You can read ‘Of two minds’, Aileen Kwun’s profile of New York duo Triboro published in Eye 95, Chris Wilson’s Reputations interview with Richard Hollis in issue 59 and ‘Sound, code, image’, my first Eye feature, in 26.

Events and shows listed on our Eye Events page include the Design History Society’s Memory Full, with contributions from Eye friends and contributors Elizabeth Resnick and Sara De Bondt, and You Won’t Bleed Me (about Blaxploitation Posters) at New York’s Poster House.

Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold, 1975, poster by Robert Tanenbaum.

After thirteen years without an Eye price increase we are raising the UK cover price to £20. Substantial increases in production and fulfilment costs in recent years have made this necessary. And after some complicated and costly manoeuvres, we can again take orders for the EU – just set the pull down menu to ‘Europe’

Thank you for for reading
