Fall Book Discussion

Join us this fall for a Book Discussion!  As part of the Greendale Welcomes Diversity Action Plan, the Greendale Public Library has selected another book to discuss with an emphasis on diverse authors and/or topics of discrimination and racism.  This book discussion will be held Thursday, November 4th @ 6pm in the Library Community Meeting Room.  We will discuss the book The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich:

“It is 1953. Thomas Wazhushk is the night watchman at the first factory to open near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota. He is also a prominent Chippewa Council member, trying to understand a new bill that is soon to be put before Congress. The US Government calls it an 'emancipation' bill; but it isn't about freedom - it threatens the rights of Native Americans to their land, their very identity. How can he fight this betrayal? Unlike most of the girls on the reservation, Pixie - 'Patrice' - Paranteau has no desire to wear herself down on a husband and kids. She works at the factory, earning barely enough to support her mother and brother, let alone her alcoholic father who sometimes returns home to bully her for money. But Patrice needs every penny to get if she's ever going to get to Minnesota to find her missing sister Vera. In The Night Watchman multi-award winning author Louise Erdrich weaves together a story of past and future generations, of preservation and progress. She grapples with the worst and best impulses of human nature, illuminating the loves and lives, desires and ambitions of her characters with compassion, wit and intelligence.”

Books will be available to checkout at the library soon, so next time you stop by the library or login to your library account online, make sure to requests a copy!  To find out more information and to register to participate, go to the Library Events Page on the GPL Website.  Registration is Required.  Register online, or call the library Referene Desk for assistance at 414-423-2136.

Book of the Month

When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim's home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are, for different reasons, simmering with resentment.
