Keeping children learning, happy and
healthy while at home

Connecting with the people around us, moving, nourishing and appreciating our bodies are four of the key pillars in feeling happy and healthy. At www.smallchanges.org.nz we have lots of activity ideas to help you have fun as a family, keeping your kids busy, learning and happy.
Small Changes was created to encourage families to spend more time together doing things that are positive for wellbeing, making 'Small Changes' to their lifestyle. It can help you to find learning in everyday activities, to use everyday items to get creative, and to be more conscious of the things you do together as a whānau.

Appreciate: Colour in with Harold
Did you know that colouring in can help develop your fine motor skills? It also helps you practice patience and relaxation. You might have colouring in books at home that you can colour, or you might like to draw your own pictures to colour in. You might even like to colour in Harold.

Here are some colouring pages you could use if you've got a printer at home:
Move: Play the floor is lava game
Imagine the floor is hot lava. Can you design a way to get around your living room and touch each wall of the room without touching the floor? You might use cushions, chairs, or a blanket to help you navigate the ‘safe’ journey.
Nourish: Eating a balanced diet
Our Small Changes Ambassador Danijela Unkovich is an expert on nutrition. In this video she talks us through tips to eating a balanced diet by eating a wide variety of foods. She tells us about the four main food groups, fruit and vegetables, breads and cereals, milk or milk products, and meat and meat alternatives.

To find out more about eating a balanced diet check out Harold's Fact Sheet 'What is a balanced diet?' and quiz here.
Connect: Make a Te Whare Tapa Whā Chatterbox
The Mental Health Foundation have just shared their awesome Te Whare Tapa Wha Chatterbox printable resource. This resource uses the four pillars to our wellbeing to give us some questions that we can kōrero about with the people in our bubble, or we could even use to check in on people outside our bubble over the phone or on a a video call.

This chatterbox is designed to help us have a kōrero about the different things that make us feel happy and healthy and to check in with each other about how we are feeling.
Nourish: Bake a special treat together
Harold and our Educator Maria share Harold's Grandma's famous Snickerdoodle recipe, a yummy special treat that you could bake together with your whānau. Check out the recipe here.
Appreciate: What are you thankful for?
It’s important for us to stop and appreciate who we are as people, to think about our beliefs and values, our dreams and goals, and all of the neat people and things we have in our lives.

Download Harold's template and fill in and decorate all the things that you are thankful for, or if you don't have a printer, design and decorate your own page. Hang this up somewhere in your home so you can look at it again later and reflect on and appreciate how lucky you are.
