Beyond The Figures: 20 years LNVH

On august 9 2021 it was exactly 20 years ago the Dutch Network of Women Professors (Landelijk Netwerk Vrouwelijke Hoogleraren - LNVH) became a foundation (‘stichting’). The LNVH began life informally in the nineties and the three founding board members Els Goulmy, Tinneke Willemsen and Bertien Collette - and of course all board members that followed in their footsteps - worked relentlessly on getting structural funding and establishing the network.

To celebrate its 20 year anniversary LNVH will launch the online campaign Beyond The Figures this month. The aim of the campaign is to show what the LNVH has achieved in the past 20 years and to look at the goals for the next 20 years. The campaign puts a spotlight on the key figures that worked on the advancement of women in science and sets the tone on how to move forward for the next 20 years towards a truly inclusive academic community. We are going to tell the stories 'behind the numbers', like the numbers and figures presented in the Women Professors Monitor, and demonstrate why and for whom the LNVH remains fully committed to reaching our goals.

‘Home base’ for the campaign is the instagramaccount @beyondthefigures from where we will link (in a slightly different form) to twitter, LinkedIn, the LNVH website and the newsletter. In the coming months LNVH will share relevant content every week, such as facts and figures from studies like the Monitor, interviews, interesting reads, tips to watch and relevant discussions in the media.

Naturally, the LNVH wants to reach as many people as possible with the campaign. You can help LNVH achieve this by following us on Instagram and drawing people's attention to the campaign, for example by sharing our content via Linkedin, Twitter or Instagram.

Alternative opening of the academic year

De AOb, FNV en WOinAction are organizing a joint opening of the academic year. The campaigners are protestesting against the structural underfunding of Dutch universities. The number of students has been increasing for years and funding per student has been decreasing. The underfunding has led to high work pressure, structural unpaid overtime, overcrowded lecture halls, temporary contracts and hyper-competition.

From one report that PWC carried out on behalf of OCW, it turned out that university education requires a structural investment of more than 1 billion. The shortage has led to abuses in which the universities want to be at the forefront at the expense of employees and students.

The Alternative Opening of the academic year takes place on September 6 in Utrecht. More information and the possibility to sign up can be found on the website of the AoB

LNVH | Save the date Affiliates' Meeting

It’s LNVH’s 20th anniversary this year. The LNVH celebrates this with a number of festive events: our Spring Symposium had 20 years LNVH as its theme, LNVH is awarding two medals for extraordinary contributions to gender equality in Dutch academia - the first one was awarded to Eindhoven University of Technology for its Irène Curie Fellowship -, the aforementioned online campaign, not 6 but 7 applicants were awarded a travel grant from the DWSFund and last but not least the Women Professors Monitor will have 20 years of awareness for proportional representation and the improvement of the position of women in academia as a central theme.

There will of course also be a special edition of the annual Affiliates’ Meeting. This event will take place on October 11 2021 and is intended for associate professors and professors affiliated with the LNVH. We kindly ask you to mark this date in your calendars. We hope that many of you will be present during this special edition of our Affiliates’ Meeting. Time, location and more information about the program will follow soon.

Are there any themes and/or moments from the past 20 years that should absolutely be put in the spotlight during this meeting? Suggestions and input are welcome via info@lnvh.nl.

LNVH | DWSFund | Call 2021 open

The call for the LNVH Distinguished Women Scientists Fund (DWSF) is open. LNVH has been awarding this travel grant for the past 9 years. LNVH created the travel grant at the request of prof. dr. Anne Cutler, former director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and emeritus professor of Comparative Language Psychology at Radboud University Nijmegen. She asked her colleagues and friends not to give her a parting gift on the occasion of her retirement, but to donate an amount to the LNVH instead. At the time, 3 grants were awarded. Currently 6 applications are rewarded per call.

This year women scientists can once again benefit from this travel grant from the LNVH DWSFund. The travel grant is intended for female postdocs (up to 3 years after their PhD and from all disciplines) who wish to travel abroad as part of their research projects.

Click here for the terms and conditions and the application form. In case of questions, please contact the LNVH bureau via 030 600 1361 | info@lnvh.nl.

LNVH | Nominations Spinoza & Stevin prize

The coming weeks, the LNVH will prepare two nominations for both the Stevin prize and the Spinoza prize. As is customary, we consult our affiliates regarding possible candidates. We welcome suggestions from our affiliates for or ideas about high potential candidates for the prestigious Spinoza and Stevin Prize before September 1 2021 via info@lnvh.nl. Please include a recent CV of the candidate proposed by you and a brief substantiation of your nomination.

LNVH | Requests for mentoring

The LNVH supports women scientists by linking them to peers who are able to advice and support them as a mentor. For one of the requests mentioned in last month’s newsletter, we weren’t able to find a match yet. We are looking forward to finding mentors among you who can advise and support:

A young female researcher in Engineering Technology (the development of Tandem Si/perovskite solar cells) – currently not working in the Netherlands – who is faced with the choice of either pursuing a career in academia or making the step into industry. She is looking for an advanced career female scientist who can briefly assist her in making that choice and who can help her gain insight in the specific steps of a scientific career in the Netherlands.

Interested in mentoring this person? Or suggestions and/or tips?
Please send an email to info@lnvh.nl.

Tip to Watch: Picture a Scientist

When people think of a scientist, they often don't think of a woman. An important reason for this is that women in science often do not receive the same respect as their male colleagues. The documentary Picture A Scientist (2020) follows three scientists dealing with sexism, harassment and systematic discrimination in the academic field. Against the tide and out of great love for their profession, they make a strong case for radically changing and improving the scientific culture. We encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

This documentary was offered to all participants of the LNVH Spring Symposium from June 10 to 12 (exclusive screening) and can now be viewed on Netflix in the Netherlands.
