Welcome

In this edition of Ladybird News, we share exciting feedback from the recent training day for Peer Mentors. The first Peer Mentor team in Qld (and Australia) committed to a day of bereavement care training under the expert guidance and support of Amy Larsen (Peer Mentor Lead) & Neisa Glennon (Bereavement Care Coordinator) from the Bereavement Services at the Children's Hospital.

We are also very proud to present our Platinum sponsors for our annual Ladybird Gala Dinner. We are so grateful for their support and the start of a long-term partnership.

The Ladybird Gala Dinner on October 16th is our main fundraising event and is gearing up to be an exciting night. Make sure you have reserved your seat by contacting our event coordinator at ladybirdcareevents@gmail.com or speak to your table host. You won't want to miss this one.

Keep on eye on our website and social media for exciting prizes about to launch in the next week through our online raffle, run over the next 4 weeks and drawn at the Gala dinner! Limited tickets available from next week in over $4000 in prizes.

Thankyou for your support and encouragement as we continue to launch this vital service to families throughout Queensland and beyond.

Sincerely,
The Ladybird Care Foundation Team

First peer mentors begin specialised training

The Peer Mentor Trianing Program was held on Saturday, August 28th with the first round of formal Peer Mentor training. Our trained Peer Mentors will then be connected with newly bereaved parents for a period of 12 - 18 mths to walk alongside them in their grief journey.

The program will aim to connect bereaved parents at different stages of their journey:

  • Peer Mentors - parents who are more than two years bereaved will receive extensive training by the Peer Mentor Program Lead, Amy Larsen, to provide peer support and information for newly bereaved parents (Peer Mentees).
  • Peer Mentees - newly bereaved parents whose child was cared for by Children’s Health Queensland will have an opportunity to connect with a specially trained bereaved parent in a mentoring relationship.
Through the program, mentors will support newly bereaved parents as they:
  • adjust to life following the death of their child
  • find services and resources that may be helpful in their bereavement
  • care for other children in the family who are mourning the loss of their brother or sister
  • face especially difficult times, such as anniversary and birthday dates
  • ensure their child’s memory is kept alive
  • return to employment, and
  • navigate relationships with other family members, friends, and neighbours as a bereaved family.

The service will start as a pilot program to ensure it meets the needs of the people it is designed to serve. Participants will be invited to share their thoughts about their experience through a service evaluation during the trial. This feedback will be used to shape the final program that will reach more bereaved family members in the future.

We are seeking expressions of interest for both Peer Mentors and Peer Mentees. If you would like to hear more about the opportunity to be involved in this program, please get in touch with Amy Larsen via email or phone 0457 185 677.

Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run
On Sunday 18th July a group of "Ladybird" supporters, donned their red and black outfits & braved the chill of the early winter morning to complete a 5km walk/run to raise awareness for the Ladybird Care Foundation. Wayne Pascoe had the opportunity to briefly talk with the Health Minister, Yvette D'ath, in an attempt to inform her of our charity's vision and mission. A fun morning was had by all and thankyou on behalf of the Foundation for, literally, "going the extra mile"!
