Around the School
Celebrating of our Diverse Culture

A HUGE shout out to our amazing International Community who provided us with another incredible International Day.

It was a special day and thank goodness we managed to squeeze it in before Lockdown!

Special thanks must also go out to Sarah Ferguson, Graeme Glass, our Bagpiper, QPS Kapa Haka and School Orchestra, our three dancers, Room 6 singers and of course our super International Ambassadors and student helpers who work all day to make it possible. Thank you to all!

Oscar

My dog is called Oscar. He is a black mini schnauzer. Oscar has four legs and a fluffy tail. His tail curls up. He has soft fur and dark puppy eyes. His fur is as soft as one million feathers. Sometimes you can’t even see his eyes. He is a little dog.

Oscar likes tickles and sleeping by the fire. He is very lazy. He likes to destroy soft things and chew sticks and shoes. He makes a mess on the floor like an explosion of sawdust. Oscar likes to go for walks and play with me. He steals tennis balls and cones when I play with Jack. Oscar is not very good at playing fetch. He doesn’t bring the ball back when I throw it. He thinks it is a funny game to play. It is not.

Oscar and I like to go for long walks and run around on the lawn.

When Oscar gets the zoomies or gets wet, he runs around as fast as flash. Oscar likes to have cuddles with me on the couch.

Chickenpox

As you will no doubt be aware - Chickenpox is doing the rounds again.

Of particular concern is that some parents are bringing their children to the Emergency Department (ED) at Lakes District Hospital (LDH).  Unfortunately ED in Queenstown is not equipped to deal with this contagious disease and it is not an appropriate place to present for diagnosis - unless the child is experiencing worrying symptoms.  LDH staff have requested that we discourage parents with essentially well children from presenting them at ED.  There have been a few in the last week that have done this - this put others - particularly immune suppressed or pregnant at risk.

If you have concerns or need someone to talk to either call their Public Health Nurse, Karina Anderson 027 447 1462, Maria Frewen 0274648990,  call Health line 0800 611 116  or call their GP in the first instance - unless experiencing serious symptoms.

Chickenpox (mate koroputa hei) is a common childhood illness that usually occurs between the ages of 2 and 10. The main symptom is an itchy, blistering rash. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which children can be vaccinated against as part of the New Zealand immunisation schedule.

Key points about chickenpox:

1.   Chickenpox is easily spread by an infected person sneezing and coughing, or by contact with weeping blisters when the sores are present.

2.   Even though chickenpox is mainly a childhood illness, adults who are exposed to the virus can still get chickenpox if they have not had chickenpox or have not been vaccinated against it. It is often more severe in adults.

3.   Most cases of childhood chickenpox are mild, but it can sometimes cause serious illness. Chickenpox is usually more severe in adults, pregnant women and their unborn babies and people with a weakened immune system.

4.   Children with chickenpox need to stay home from school and early childhood centres. Chickenpox is infectious 2 days before the rash appears until all the blisters have dried up. This usually takes 5 to 7 days.

5.   Vaccination for chickenpox is free for children at 15 months of age and children turning 11 years of age who have never been infected with or not previously vaccinated for chickenpox. Read more about the chickenpox vaccine<https://www.healthnavigator.org.nz/medicines/c/chickenpox-vaccine/>.

Access To Free Period Products

Being able to go to school everyday is important for overall wellbeing. It provides a safe environment where children and young people can grow and learn, build social connections and a sense of belonging, and develop their potential. It has long-term impacts for health, employment opportunities and life choices.

Access to period products is just one way to remove barriers that prevent children and young people regularly attending school. Providing free period products is one way our government can directly address poverty and positively impact children’s wellbeing.

The initiative aims to provide free period products to children and young people in all state and state-integrated schools and kura across New Zealand during 2021, not only for use within the school setting but also at home. Queenstown Primary School is part of this initiative.

Access to period products is a necessity, not a luxury. Our product has arrived!

To access product please see Mrs Lock, Mrs Bailey, Mrs Nichols, Mrs Little, the office staff or talk to your teacher to collect two packets of the perfered product to take and use at home. Product will be available and housed within school bathrooms for use throughout the day.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Slow Down Near School Buses

A reminder to parents/caregivers to take extra care around school bus stops. Please park on the same side as the bus stop wherever possible. But if you do need to park on the opposite side, cross to your children first instead of having them cross to you. Please never call to your child from the other side of the road – yes it does happen - and it can put children in great danger!

Parents please remember that the maximum speed when passing a stationary school bus stopped to pick up or drop off children is 20km/h regardless of which side the bus is on.  Please take extra care around school bus stops and provide supervision for children needing to cross.
