If you do one thing this week... the latest episode of Google Firestarters is now out - this one featuring the ever erudite and insightful Tom Roach. His blog posts are some of the best writing on advertising anywhere and this one was fascinating to record, not least because of Tom's unique perspective having transitioning from a career at some of the most well respected creative agencies (BBH, adam&eveDDB, AMV) to a new role as VP of Brand Planning at Jellyfish, the global marketing services company that has its origins in performance marketing.

Given that context he has some fascinating views around convergence in the industry - the integration of creative and media and the bringing together of brand and performance, human and machines, creativity and algorithms. These really are some of the big challenges/opportunities facing the industry and Tom has a characteristically smart take on all of them. There's plenty to deliberate on, agree or disagree with, or just to ingest from this episode so do go watch / listen to it now.
Links of the Week...
  • '...we should probably react to most new technology by doing more of the new thing and more of another thing which is the opposite of the new thing.' Read of the week goes to Rory Sutherland and his excellent piece on 'hedonic adaptation' (or the idea that our happiness returns to a baseline over time) and the importance of what Rory calls 'mental crop rotation' (HT @Slightly_Random)
  • A useful thread here from Andrew Chen on the new metrics of the creator economy. Andrew also had a good read on next gen social media and what today's social apps can learn from Web 2.0
  • Meanwhile TikTok is testing allowing users to upload longer video (5 minute and even 10 minute videos). And this was a good thread on what happens when your app demo video goes viral on TikTok
  • A good post from Zoe Scaman on the importance of generalism and exploration in strategy (coincidentally I'm belatedly reading David Epstein's 'Range' which Zoe mentions - and which is excellent)
  • For the release of his new album DONDA Kanye has created an accompanying handheld music player that enables fans to add effects to the music, split songs, remix, customise and adapt individual tracks. It's a really interesting spin on the increasingly blurred lines between artists, creators and fans.
Quote of the week...

'At the end of my life, when I say one final What have I done?, let my answer be, I have done love.' Jen Pastiloff (via @KateofHysteria)
This was a rather beautiful data visualisation this by Nathan Yau of a 24 hour snapshot of how Americans spend their day.
And finally... a celebration of Tokyo artists, designers and illustrators whilst also paying tribute to the New Yorker. Absolutely glorious. (HT @presentcorrect)
This week I was playing post-holiday catch up but also delivered a number of talks to teams at Dyson, Colgate-Palmolive and Abrdn. I've also had my first in-person talk confirmed since pre-pandemic will be exciting, but perhaps slightly weird to do.

If you're interested in finding out more about my virtual workshops, consultancy, or you'd like me to talk (virtually or IRL) to your team do drop me a note.

Want to find out how I can help you or your business? Let's talk.
