Cornwall designated Enhanced Response Area

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have today been designated an ‘Enhanced Response Area’ to help tackle the current rise in COVID-19 cases. It means that additional resources will be made available by the government to help reinforce Cornwall Council’s efforts to stop the spread of the virus and keep residents safe, with more details expected next week.

Case rates in Cornwall are rising sharply and are some of the highest in the country, so please continue to encourage people in your area to keep testing and taking care:

To keep taking care of ourselves and others, we should all:

  • Get double jabbed. Find out where to get your vaccination here.
  • Take regular lateral flow tests.
  • Wash or sanitise our hands regularly.
  • Wear a mask in crowds and on public transport.
  • Keep our distance from others where possible.
  • Meet people outside if possible and ensure indoor areas are well-ventilated if not.

New CALC training offer

Cornwall Association of Local Councils (CALC) has partnered with specialist communications training provider Breakthrough Communications to offer high quality training courses designed to help with local council communications and engagement work. There are courses for both officers and councillors, and the training is delivered online via Zoom.

You can see the full suite of courses here and make direct individual council bookings. Courses cost £30 plus VAT per delegate.

2021-2025 Police and Crime Pan

The Police and Crime Commissioner is asking for views on the future of policing in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It takes just four minutes to complete the online survey, and your feedback will help shape the 2021-25 Police and Crime Plan. The more people who complete the survey, the more accurate the picture will be of the policing priorities for Cornwall’s communities. The survey is open until 1 September.

Please leave a clear way for the Tour of Britain

Please remind people in your area to check whether they will be affected by parking restrictions on the Tour of Britain cycle race route.

Some sections of the route will need to be kept clear of parked vehicles during the event on Sunday 5 September, so people should plan ahead and check if the place they usually park will be available. On some Penzance roads there will be restrictions from 4pm on 3 September through to 6pm on 5 September.

Find out more about Clearways on the 111 mile race route.

Climate change and community resilience

Tevi and Cornwall Community Flood Forum are holding a free event on Friday 10 September from 10am – 2pm for communities, businesses and local councils working to reduce their carbon emissions and towards net zero.

The session is an opportunity to learn more about climate change, the challenges we face as impacts are felt, and what can be done to combat the effects and boost local communities’ climate resilience.

For more information and to register for the event, visit Eventbrite.

Changing Places toilets

Cornwall Council is calling for Expressions of Interest from organisations in the public, private and voluntary and community sector that would like to install Changing Places toilets in their buildings.

The Government has invited the Council to submit a bid for funding for Changing Places toilets, which may enable the building of up to three new facilities within existing publicly accessible buildings in Cornwall.

Changing Places toilets are larger, accessible toilets with equipment such as hoists, privacy screens, adult-sized changing benches, peninsular toilets and space for carers. They’re designed to meet needs of disabled children and adults with complex care needs who need carer support, appropriate equipment and more space. They help disabled people to have greater access to public places and services and take part in everyday activities with the same dignity as everyone else.

The Council would also like views from users and their families about where in Cornwall they would like to see the new facilities installed. This will help prioritise Expressions of Interest and support the bid to Government.

The closing date for Expressions of Interest and views on locations is 10 September 2021.

Cornwall AONB Management Plan 2022-27

There’s an opportunity to comment on the Draft Cornwall AONB Management Plan 2022-27 in an online survey. This draft takes into account feedback from the initial stakeholder and public consultation held in autumn 2020.

There are approximately 95 parish and town councils that are within or have some of the Cornwall AONB in their parish or town, so make sure your views are heard. The survey will be live until 8 October.

Making rural housing more affordable

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) is running an online event on making rural housing more affordable, which takes place on 17 November

At the event, sector experts will discuss the difference parish and town councils can make to influence local initiatives to make housing cheaper and affordable in rural areas. Speakers include Lord Best, chair of the Affordable Housing Commission, Martin Collett, chief executive at English Rural and Richard Quallington, executive director at Action for Communities in Rural England

Prices for the event start from £30. Find out more and register for a place here.

Cornwall needs more childminders

Please share this information with people in your area.

Cornwall Council is holding a series of webinars to encourage more people to become a registered childminder. The webinars are a chance to meet current childminders and ask questions about the opportunities available in Cornwall.

New childminders will also be able to access support from a mentor through the Quality Childminding in Cornwall (QCC) and will have access to training.

Sign up for a webinar or find out more about becoming a childminder.
