Dear friends,

I'm sending a quick reminder about this event on Monday!!!

Thank you for your support that has made it possible for me to represent Providence’s District 4 in the State House. Democracy is a team sport, and I am grateful to you for the work we do together to make Rhode Island a better place.

The legislature started the session pre-vaccine, socially distanced at  the Veteran’s Auditorium, and then moved to the House chamber this spring. COVID, education, equity, housing and the environment were at the top of my agenda, and I’m glad we were able to pass good legislation in all of these areas this year.

This session, the General Assembly:

  • Passed the Act on Climate which updates and adds accountability to our state’s framework for climate action, and passed several other important environmental measures
  • Started a fund for affordable housing with $25 million and a tax on real estate conveyances.
  • Created a path to a $15 minimum wage and passed the Fair Pay Act.
  • Passed common sense gun legislation to prohibit anyone other than a police officer or school security guard from carrying a gun on school grounds, and to prohibit straw purchases of guns for people not allowed to purchase a gun themselves
  • Enacted legislation I sponsored to establish the Holocaust and Genocide Education Commission; legislation to ensure that African American history is taught in our schools; and the Civics Literacy Act.

  • Required  that single stall bathrooms be marked as all gender or gender neutral bathrooms so that everyone can access restrooms without worrying if the sign on the door matches their gender. We also updated the definition of sexual orientation in housing discrimination law.

We’re not done! There’s more work to do. High quality public schools, environmental and economic justice continue to be at the top of my priority list.
