Welcome to school start up! We know this message finds you at the busiest time of year, so we won’t hold it against you if you save this to read later. But before you do, note we have two updates related to accessibility (in Canvas and Panopto) and another significant user interface change coming to Qualtrics. Also see details about the Zoom tour happening today in Events below!

Teaching and Learning Remotely

Zoom official logoZoom updates for teaching & learning

  • In Focus Mode, only the host can see participants’ videos and profile pictures. Meeting participants are only able to see themselves, the host/co-hosts, and the content they share. Hosts and co-hosts can also choose to view participants in gallery view, seeing all participants simultaneously. Start Focus Mode from the “More” menu on the toolbar of the desktop client. Desktop client for Windows or macOS version 5.7.3 or higher required.
  • Coming soon: transfer meetings between devices--from mobile to desktop and back to mobile--allowing users to take advantage of the mobility of the mobile client and the more feature-rich desktop client.

Canvas

To be released 9/18

  • The Assignments and Quizzes - add / edit / delete permission has been refactored to support permissions granularity.
  • The Accessibility Checker can be enabled in sub-accounts on 9/20. If enabled, it automatically displays an indicator within the Rich Content Editor when accessibility issues are detected. This indicator will help users know about detected issues without having to open the Checker. Once opened, it displays the number of errors and how to correct each one.

In review

The New Analytics Attendance tab updates according to criteria set at the account level. This change allows criteria to update attendance information for individual courses and remove manual attendance tracking. The Attendance tab can only be configured at the root University level, so this enhancement will be presented at the ATAB (Academic Technology Advisory Board) for review before it can be turned on.

Panopto

Panopto logoStarting today, 9/1, Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) captions will be automatically enabled for newly created or imported videos in Panopto. This change is not retroactive. Learn more about enabling or disabling ASR Captions in Panopto.

Qualtrics

Qualtrics XM logoUser interface changes coming 10/5

Qualtrics is rolling out a new homepage dashboard and project view. Highlighted changes include:
  • A new homepage for logged in users.
  • The homepage will function like a dashboard with analytics and tiles that the user can configure to be shown or hidden, depending on what they choose to feature.
  • The redesigned Projects page improves project (survey) organization and management.
  • For example, the “Uncategorized” folder will be removed, and instead folders will be nested under a root folder like a typical file management system.Screenshot of new Qualtrics homepage with analytics and dashboard styling
Users will be able to opt-out of the new view for one month and will be permanently migrated in November. Qualtrics will provide support documentation and videos ahead of the change, which will be included in next month’s newsletter!

Slack

Slack logoNew and enhanced features

  • Split view lets you open two different parts of Slack side-by-side, so you don’t have to move back and forth between them. Press Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) and click on a conversation or page to open it in split view.
  • New sidebar preferences allow you manage how conversations are displayed and sorted in your entire sidebar. You can still manage conversation display and sorting for individual custom sections. Any preferences you set for an individual custom section will override the preferences you set for your entire sidebar.
  • When you add bookmarks in a channel or direct message, you can add an emoji to display alongside the bookmark name. You can also rearrange your bookmarks in the conversation header and see who edited a bookmark last.
