This Week's Spotlights

Office Closure for Labor Day

In observance of Labor Day, the office will be closed on Monday September 6.  The office will resume regular hours again on Tuesday September 7.

Garage Sale Notice

Just a few short weeks ago I (Pastor Anna) presided at a pandemic wedding: a simple ceremony, outdoors, with only the couple, 4 siblings, parents, and the photographer. At that wedding, I read the very familiar 1 Corinthians 13. Usually when this passage is read, the focus is love, but as I drove home from the park, I found myself thinking about hope and all that I’ve hoped for and had to set aside over the last year and a half. We hear in verse 13, “Faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.” Faith and hope abide alongside love because we need them to. Until we know the fullness of God, we need faith and hope to accompany us on our journeys.
Surely in this stretching season of ongoing pandemic, we have relied on our faith, and we have hoped for much. Just as love will endure beyond faith and hope, we lead with love as our default. Leading out of love, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel the fall 2021 Linworth Garage Sale.
With cases of Covid19 on the rise, we have examined all options in how to move forward and do not believe we can facilitate this event in a way that keeps our members, volunteers, and the community safe. Even before this most recent surge, the survey results displayed a hesitancy from volunteers in proceeding. In the meeting of leaders that followed a week after the survey went out, the leaders stated that the rise in rates in that week were concerning enough that they would change their survey responses.
We understand that this decision may make you sad. It may also make you frustrated. We also recognize the grief that comes with such a momentous event being cancelled yet again. Please know that we considered so many options and tried our best. We simply cannot take the risk. We love each other and the community too much for that.
The Garage Sale is more than just a sale. We know the community that is built in the preparation for such an event. Please know that we will be encouraging connections between our members in the season that would have been the garage sale.
We also know that many people have been “saving their stuff” for the garage sale. At this time, to save costs on storage, we will not be accepting donations. If you cannot hold onto your treasures, we encourage you to call us! We can recommend partner organizations that are collecting donations. You may also entertain the idea of selling your items independently (through Facebook market or even resale shops like New Uses on Sawmill just off of Hard Rd.) and then donating the proceeds of your sale to the ministries at Linworth UMC usually supported by the sale.
We pray for the end of this pandemic. Wear your mask. Wash your hands. Have conversation with your doctor about receiving the vaccine (if you haven’t already). Each of us is called to act in love even as we journey in faith and cling to hope.
Here’s hoping for Spring 2022…

Pastor Anna, Senior Pastor
Denny Devine, Master of Garage Sale Ceremonies
"I've Been Meaning to Ask..."
Connection Survey

Dear Church - "We've been meaning to ask...?" - was our most recent sermon series where we explored several questions that the scriptures invite us to ask one another to become a closer and more compassionate faith community.  Asking questions of God and of one another creates opportunity for growth and connection.  We long to be a church that continues to grow in faith and connect with one another in authentic and meaningful ways.
We have created a brief survey to ask you questions about what hurts, about what you need, and about where we want to go from here.  We care about your needs, your pain, and your hopes.  Many of the needs and some of the pain and hopes may be shared, even though so many of us feel alone we are often living similar stories. Whether it is a "common" concern or a unique individual incident - your story matters. We want to pray with you and for you.  We want to plan with you and for you. Will you take a moment to share your story with us?
As always please know that your pastors love you. We are only a phone call or email away.
Please let us know if we can serve or support you in any way.
In Christ's grace and peace -
Your LUMC Pastors
Pastor Anna, Pastor Sara, Pastor Gene, Pastor Brooke

Policy Update from Pastor Anna:
We remain committed to caring for our neighbor:
Any person over the age of two will be asked to “mask up” before entering our building, regardless of vaccination status, and remain masked for the duration of your stay in the building.
We understand that you may be uncomfortable wearing a mask, and if that is the case then we invite you to join us for worship on our live-stream. We live-stream both the 9 a.m. and the 10:30 a.m. services.
We are here to serve, to lead, and to care for you. But you are also called to the same: ministries of serving, caring, and connecting with one another. As Delta surges, may we continue to change more and more into the likeness of Jesus.
Policy Update for Linworth Children's Center (LCC)
We will be requiring all visitors, parents, and staff to be masked until recommendations by local health departments change. We strongly recommend that parents send KB and K students in masks. For below KB, masks will be parental choice.

                          Missions for Haiti

As you have heard, no doubt, there was an earthquake in Haiti. This 7.2 magnitude earthquake has ravaged the already fragile nation. Less than a month after the assassination of Haiti's president, this earthquake was centered just 60 miles west of the earthquake in 2010 which such damage that full recovery has not been achieved. Then as if the country had not endured enough, Tropical Depression Grace dumped massive amounts of rain, causing flash flooding and mudslides.

Overwhelmed by the stress on the hospitals and with roads that are impassable, many who are injured are going without care, and many go without food, clean water, sanitation, and housing.

“Hundreds of thousands of people will sleep under the stars tonight for fear of the aftershocks that still continue,” reports David Draeger, UM Volunteers in Mission Coordinator in Haiti. “Many will go to sleep hungry because they don't have access to food or the ability to cook. Many will go to sleep not knowing the fate of loved ones still buried under rubble. Countless numbers have injuries that have not been treated because there is no medicine available.” The Methodist Church is active in the three major areas of destruction and has already done assessments and know what is required to help at this time.

It has been shared with me that at least four of our members have served in Haiti on at least 15 mission experiences after the 2010 earthquake. Whether you, yourself, have a personal connection, you share in the connection with our sisters and brothers in Haiti through Linworth United Methodist Church and the shared status as God's Beloved.

If you are able, we invite you to give, perhaps even sacrificially, to the relief efforts in Haiti. You may give online by clicking here or by giving to Linworth UMC, indicating "Haiti Relief" on the memo line or envelope category. Your tax deductible gift will be used to directly aid the people of Haiti in their relief efforts.

Of course, no matter the amount which you are able to give, we invite you to join us in covering the people of Haiti in prayer.

 Labyrinth Prayer Walk

A labyrinth is a meandering singular path used in prayer and meditation. It is a metaphor for life’s journey, a pilgrimage practice of mindfulness, and an opportunity to meet God with our whole selves- body, mind, and spirit. Many people use the labyrinth for discernment when a decision is on the horizon, to prayer for a loved one or the world, or during times of transition or stress. It’s a beautiful practice!

Christine Hiester will be leading a labyrinth walk at the beautiful outdoor stone labyrinth on the Ohio Wesleyan University campus on Wednesday September 8th from 6:30 to 8pm. RSVP is required: christinehiester73@gmail.com. Space is limited to 20 people.”

Are you interested in joining our Celebration Ringers? We are in need of a bass ringer for the 2021-22 choir season. These bells are bigger and heavier, so arm strength (or a desire to build it!) is a plus. Basic music reading ability is required. No handbell experience necessary- we will teach you the technique!

Rehearsals on Thursday evenings from 6:15-7:15 beginning September 2nd.

 Calling All Ringers & Singers!

Reverberation Ringers and Chancel Choir fall Information– participants needed!

There’s no better time to get involved with the music of Linworth! Chancel Choir welcomes singers, ages high school through adult, and would especially benefit from tenor and bass voices as we come into the fall. We sing varied music throughout the year, plan special events in the Christmas and Easter seasons, and are open to those who might be seasonal singers because of travel or other commitments.

Our Reverberation Ringers choir is looking for a player to help in the bass bells section. Ringers need to have experience reading music, but we will teach you handbell technique. We have a great time building community and beautiful music each week!

  • Reverberation Ringers meets from 6:15-7:15 each Thursday during the choir year and plays in the service once per month.
  • The Chancel Choir meets from 7:30-9pm each Thursday after bells and sings to support the service most weeks from September through May.

Please contact Christine Hiester to sign up: christinehiester73@gmail.com

Students in grades K-6 are invited to rehearse with Ms. Becky right after the 10:30 service each Sunday. Choir rehearsal will be from 11:30-12:00 in the choir room. The choir will sing periodically in worship services and will also explore dramas and musicals. We will be masked and following COVID safety protocols to ensure the safety of our young singers. Look out for more information and sign-ups coming in September!
Preschool Music Time:
New this fall for preschoolers, Ms. Becky will be doing music and movement time during preschool Sunday school classes. This active time will get preschoolers on their feet, singing and dancing to age appropriate church songs. There will be some opportunities to sing in worship for interested kids.
