THIS WEEK'S TOP STORIES

Sophomores walk the halls of Lane on Aug. 24 as part of Myrtle & Gold Week, an event to familiarize sophomores with Lane. (Mara Mellits for The Champion)

For the first time in fifteen months, Lane saw a full campus today as 7th through 12th graders came for the first day of school. While remote learning has disappeared, the threat of the coronavirus stays, as COVID-19 cases spike in Chicago with the Delta variant. Editor-in-Chief Alex Burstein has more on how Lane is approaching the new school year hoping for both precaution and normality.
Sports

Gym 3, where wrestling hosted their open mats Mondays and Wednesdays this summer. (Allegra Coleman for The Champion)

As Lane athletes prepared for competition, they had an extra resource this summer: open gyms. From five-on-five basketball to running, Lane offered multiple open gym opportunities this summer for Lane students to train. Managing Editor Allegra Coleman has more on how the open gyms worked out this summer and what the student reaction to them was.

Lane huddles after losing to Kenwood on Friday, Aug. 27. (Megan Camacho for The Champion)

Despite high expectations heading into the 2021-22 season, the varsity football team had a rough start to the year, falling 27-9 to Kenwood in front of a packed crowd at Lane Stadium. Despite bright spots on both sides of the ball, Kenwood’s size was able to shut down Lane’s scoring for most of the game. Photo and Graphics Editor Megan Camacho has more on Friday night’s season opener.

A & E

Netflix

From the shores of the Bahamas to the hallways of South Crenshaw High School in California, summer’s top television shows brought viewers to a multitude of places across the globe. Read Editor-in-Chief Mara Mellits’ and A&E Editor Breanna Williams’ reviews of some of the top television from the past few months: ‘Outer Banks,’ ‘Elite,’ ‘Never Have I Ever’ and ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.’

Note from the Editors

The Editorial Board will not publish an edition of The Champion Weekly on Sept. 6, 2021, as it is Labor Day, a non-attendance day for students. We’ll be back on Sept. 13.
