Working & Caring
August 2021

Welcome to the August edition of Working & Caring!

We had our first working carers meet-up earlier this month at the Berretto Lounge and you can read more about it below. It was brilliant to finally be able to get this up and running. I know that attending these sort of events can seem daunting initially, but I promise it will be worth it once you get there!

Earlier this month I also attended the dementia-friendly film screening at the Savoy Cinema in Heaton Moor. Signpost have partnered with the cinema for monthly screenings and in September we'll be showing Oklahoma! If you're caring for someone with dementia, or someone else who may appreciate the adaptations made to the screening, then visit the cinema's website for more details. One carer per group gets in for free with our Connecting Carers Card. The Savoy are also doing autism-friendly screenings. These special screenings currently take place during the day, so may suit carers who work part-time. It would be great to see some of you there.

I will be sharing our new carer-friendly checklist with local businesses throughout September (and onwards!) and would love it if you could help share it too. Before next month's newsletter comes out I will also have attended the Stockport Business Awards with some of my colleagues. This will be a great opportunity to find out how some of Stockport's businesses are supporting carers within their workforce. Excitingly we've been nominated in the category for Best Not-for-Profit Organisation - wish us luck!

Best wishes,

Rebecca

Thank you to those that came to our first meet-up and for the lovely feedback:

"I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to organise the social event at Berretto Lounge last Wednesday. It was a very enjoyable event; the opportunity to spend an evening relaxing and chatting did us the world of good and we look forward to the next event and meeting you again."

Read about all our events here including our new 'Walk to Fitness' group which may suit carers who work part-time or are able to attend daytime activities.

New employer checklist

As part of our work to make Stockport a more carer-friendly borough, we've developed a new employer checklist and hope to share it with as many organisations as we can.

Through the 'Work With Us' project, we're available to support local businesses to be more carer-friendly and we'd love to showcase examples of employers who have supported their staff with caring responsibilities.

If you're currently working, it would be great if you could please share the checklist with your manager, HR or someone responsible for employee well-being. We would love to know what support, if any, your place of work offers. Please get in touch and let us know!

Have your say about caring

Carers UK have launched their annual State of Caring survey and we would encourage you to take part and share your experiences.

It may feel like carers are asked to complete endless surveys, with seemingly little difference made afterwards, but this is the UK's most comprehensive research into the lives and experiences of carers. Organisations, such as Signpost, find the results extremely helpful for their work.

What will Carers UK and other organisations do with your evidence?
  • Campaign for increased rights and entitlements for carers by sharing select findings with MPs, Government and local decision makers.
  • Understand your experiences to argue for better rights such as a right to Carer’s Leave in the workplace.
  • Provide evidence to help improve carers’ experience of services and support to make life easier.
  • Make a strong case for increasing financial support, such as Carer’s Allowance.
  • Provide evidence of the impact of the pandemic on unpaid carers, to argue for better support to manage through and recover from the pandemic.
There are questions about working and caring and we want to make sure your thoughts are included. The survey will take at least 30 minutes to complete.

The survey closes on 13th September.
